What’s Up, with Larry?

Have you broken down on the trail:

We always look at what tools you need for recovery, but what happens after the recovery, and there are often repairs needed.

If you can only take 5 items, what items would you take to Do repairs on the trail?  I have been thinking about this as I try to cut weight in my rig.

Some are obvious and others may not be.

  • A full set of tools to take things apart, typically suspension and drive components are going to be the bulk of your repairs, I would also include the tools needed to remove spark plugs.

  • Heavy ratchet strap.  You never know when you need to Align or hold something together.

  • Trail welder, There are different options, we have covered them here also.  Make sure to include your welding equipment. I’ll include some scrap metal in this one also.

  • U joints.  Driveline components take a beating, your front axle joints unless you running CV joints.   And joints for your rear and front axle.
  • The last one is something that helped us do a joint repair on Hell’s Revenge in Utah.   A trail vise can be a big help if you need to press u-joints in or hold a tie rod to bend it back.  Or like we did, to assemble a control arm joint.

There are always more things to bring.  Like fluids and spare bolts and nuts. And Tire patch and plug kit.

But if you’re traveling with a group, you can share what you take to lighten the load.
