This Week In Jeep

Dumb Criminal (Jeep Thief) Story

We are all young once. And typically it’s in our adolescent and teen years that we do stupid stuff and generally makes some epic mistakes. Maybe one of these days we’ll all pull up around the campfire and talk about the dumb stuff we’ve done over the years.

For now, though I will regale you with a dumb criminal story out of Troy, Michigan.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested this week after he reportedly stole a Jeep in Troy and totaled it in Warren. According to authorities, it happened just after 5 p.m. on April 21. According to the police report, the victim, the owner of the Jeep agreed to meet this 16-year-old punk at the Ace Auto Wash parking lot on East Maple Road to potentially sell his 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Police said the subject agreed to purchase the vehicle after a test drive and showed the seller a large amount of cash — the cash was apparently fake. When the victim went to retrieve his personal items from the trunk, the subject drove off. The Jeep owner worked at the auto wash business and got a coworker to chase after the subject. Police said they caught up to the Jeep at a stoplight and the driver of the Jeep rammed into the co-worker’s vehicle to getaway.

Police told area departments to be on the lookout for the stolen vehicle. The Warren Police Department located the vehicle just hours later when it was involved in a collision on Mound Road, just north of Nine Mile Road. Police apprehended the driver and booked him on multiple charges. Unfortunately, police say the victim’s vehicle was completely totaled in the crash. Because there was a large amount of counterfeit money involved in this case, aspects of it are still undergoing federal investigation.

Jeepformers Social Club – Jeepers Helping Their Community

A group of Jeep enthusiasts from St. Louis, Missouri will caravan to the Alton, Illinois   Fire Department this Saturday, April 29th, for a visit in honor of International Firefighters’ Day. The Jeepformers Social Club, led by Lee and Glines Stokes of St. Louis, Missouri will leave St. Louis — where it’s also honoring firefighters — around 2:30 p.m. and arrive at the Alton, Illinois firehouse on 20th Street around 3 p.m.

The group will be recognizable by logo flags on either side of the vehicles. Well, that and the fact you will see 20 some-odd flagged jeeps all in a row might also give it away.

This isn’t the first time the Jeepformers came to Alton. In December, a parade of several Jeeps led by a box truck full of home furnishings came to the Alton home of a single mother of three who has sickle cell disease. On Saturday they plan to bring celebratory balloons and a basket full of all sorts of items to the firemen and women of the town of Alton. International Firefighters’ Day is actually on May 4th and is a nationally recognized date to honor the sacrifices firefighters make and to thank current and past firefighters for their contributions. For more details, on the International Firefighters Day visit https://www.firefightersday.org/     If you are interested in this particular event the Jeepformers are holding, or any future charity runs they may be doing, you can join and you don’t necessarily have to live in the same town as they do. Any Jeep lover is welcome to join the nonprofit group, which has a $25 per month membership fee that goes towards their frequent outreach efforts. If you want more details on the Jeepformers Social Club, we will have a link to their Facebook page in the show notes for this episode. https://www.facebook.com/JeepformersSC/

Michigan Jeep Blessing Going To Happen Dammit!

Also happening this Saturday is one of the area’s first large outdoor gatherings of the year. And it will be happening, pandemic or not. Held for the last 20 years, (with the exception of last year), the Mesick Jeep Blessing has grown into one of Northern Michigan’s largest events, featuring a group Jeep blessing, live bands, vendors of all kinds, and multiple off-road courses for every build or skill level. Last year, due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19, organizers made the decision to not hold the event; instead, they shared a video of the blessing on their website and social media channels. The highest turnout they’ve ever had at the Jeep blessing was 2,015 vehicles, with several thousand individuals on the property, located at the corner of M-115 and M-37. Event founder Deb Stafford said they’re confident that the 20-30 acres of property where they host the event will be more than adequate to handle the crowd that normally turns out for the event. Although there’s no official attendance limitation, Stafford said if they run out of parking spaces, they will be forced to start turning people away.

The cost to attend the event as a spectator is $5 per person 16 years old and up. Cost for those under 16 is free. For more information, on this event or the group hosting it, check out the show notes for this episode at Jeeptalkshow.com for all the relevant links.
