Ep. 28 Wife’s Mustang Died… So I Bought Her ANOTHER Jeep Cherokee XJ!
Episode 28 – Wife’s Mustang Died… So I Bought Her Another Jeep Cherokee XJ! | XJ Talk Well it’s that time again! In Episode 28 of XJ Talk, I share the full story of replacing my wife’s failing 3.8L V6 Ford Mustang with a 1999 Chili Pepper Red Jeep Cherokee XJ. We’re now a proud two red XJ family — the 1998 and the new 1999 Sport! I walk through finding the 142k-mile XJ on Craigslist, the test drive, buying it during lunch, and all the initial work: buffing the sun-faded paint back to life (destroyed a polishing pad on the roof!), cleaning up the body side moldings, and planning Saturday AC repairs with new O-rings and R-134a. We also cover lift kit plans for the 99 using parts from the 98, tire size discussions for a daily driver, SYE options (Dirtbound Offroad Hack-n-Tap vs Tom Woods), driveshaft redundancy, heat creep troubleshooting, 4.56 gears, cooling mods, and long-term goals like ARB Air Lockers and 33″ tires. Special call-in from Jensen in Canada! We talk shop on his orange race XJ, Comanche MJ projects, Brown Dog Industries motor mounts, vehicle hoarding, breast cancer fundraising through racing, and why XJ Talk remains the friendliest Jeep Cherokee community. Key moments include Dalton’s impressive $100 no-weld conduit roof rack build and plenty of classic Jeep guy banter. Tony
Well it’s that time again. 8pm Central Time.
[00:00:56:20 – 00:01:00:22]
Tony
This is the show about Jeep Cherokee’s XJtalk.com.
[00:01:02:07 – 00:01:03:14]
Tony
Episode 28.
[00:01:04:24 – 00:01:07:12]
Tony
Wow. Just two more for 30.
[00:01:09:01 – 00:01:12:19]
Tony
It’s a weekly show about Jeep Cherokees and
[00:01:13:29 – 00:01:17:25]
Tony
things that are going on. Usually automotive related, but not always.
[00:01:19:24 – 00:01:23:24]
Tony
Tonight I’m going to give you a little update on what happened with last week.
[00:01:25:00 – 00:01:32:01]
Tony
The failed Mustang and the Jeep replacement. So we’ll get going here in just a minute.
[00:02:32:02 – 00:02:44:08]
(Music)
[00:02:44:08 – 00:03:05:10]
Tony
Okie dokie. Well I was just chatting with a potential caller. We were trying to get him on here for the last several days. Due to various things, including me being lazy, we haven’t done it. So we’ll get to that here in just a second. Well I was just going to give you a little update. Last week I spent most of the show talking about the problems I was having with my wife’s Ford Mustang.
[00:03:05:10 – 00:03:08:11]
Tony
And it’s a 3.8 V6 engine.
[00:03:08:11 – 00:03:13:06]
Tony
And I guess it was, I don’t think that I had done anything that day.
[00:03:14:14 – 00:03:26:24]
Tony
Well actually I think I had looked and I saw a 1999 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 4WD AW4 transmission. With 142,000 miles
[00:03:26:24 – 00:03:28:11]
Tony
on Craigslist.
[00:03:28:11 – 00:03:31:13]
Tony
I called about it the day after.
[00:03:31:13 – 00:03:33:08]
Tony
And found that
[00:03:34:15 – 00:03:40:28]
Tony
the guy that, it was a dealer, a used car dealership that had it. And he had just bought it from another dealer.
[00:03:40:28 – 00:03:43:00]
Tony
Which kind of concerned me. But anyway,
[00:03:43:00 – 00:03:48:08]
Tony
he had just bought it from another dealer. And he wasn’t aware that it was a 4WD. I
[00:03:48:08 – 00:03:51:21]
Tony
was looking at the ad from the original person that
[00:03:51:21 – 00:03:55:16]
Tony
had placed the Craigslist ad. So anyway,
[00:03:55:16 – 00:04:04:13]
Tony
I went over there and it was relatively close to where I work. So I drove over there during lunch and had a look at it.
[00:04:04:13 – 00:04:12:28]
Tony
And the paint looked pretty bad. Not like it was showing through, but just wasn’t all nice, bright and shiny.
[00:04:12:28 – 00:04:16:29]
Tony
And the guy said that he thought it had been sitting outside in the sun
[00:04:16:29 – 00:04:29:20]
Tony
quite a bit. The interior looked very nice. The engine ran very well when I test drove it. Other than a little bit of wiggle which I later attributed to a very low tire.
[00:04:30:16 – 00:04:35:28]
Tony
It was very smooth and boy it had a lot of get up and go to it. So
[00:04:35:28 – 00:04:38:19]
Tony
I spoke with my wife
[00:04:38:19 – 00:04:53:22]
Tony
and made the command decision to purchase it. So we are now a 2 Jeep XJ family. The 1998 which is the bright red one. And the 1999 which is I think they call it the Chili Pepper Red.
[00:04:53:22 – 00:04:59:22]
Tony
So that’s pretty exciting. Other than having two beasts to feed.
[00:05:02:18 – 00:05:25:00]
Tony
A member was able to get me a build sheet for the 1999 even before I bought it. And was able to see that pretty much all of the options that we have on the 1998 we have on the 1999. It didn’t have the upcountry tow package, I’m sorry the upcountry package or the tow package like the 1998 did. So no factory skids.
[00:05:25:00 – 00:05:28:04]
Tony
No fog lights and no tow hooks.
[00:05:28:04 – 00:05:39:13]
Tony
But luckily since I have a custom front bumper on the 1998 I still have the tow hooks and the fog lights and various and sundry goodies.
[00:05:39:13 – 00:05:43:03]
Tony
So I’ll be putting all that stuff on the 1999.
[00:05:44:15 – 00:05:56:04]
Tony
So far I have found out how to get rid of the grays off the body side molding. Because it’s not painted on the 1999. It’s a 1999 Sport.
[00:05:57:05 – 00:06:13:03]
Tony
And I’ve got it back to a pretty good shade of black. And was able to polish out using some polishing compound and a little machine able to get the paint looking pretty good. It’s got some spots. I was a little surprised I can’t find that Chili Pepper Red anywhere.
[00:06:13:03 – 00:06:19:25]
Tony
At least two of the auto parts places that I tried. They kind of skip over it. I guess it’s not a real popular color.
[00:06:19:25 – 00:06:25:10]
Tony
I was lucky that they had the, I think it’s PR4, which is the bright red, the
[00:06:25:10 – 00:06:29:01]
Tony
poppy red that is the color on the 98.
[00:06:29:01 – 00:06:32:11]
Tony
Well let’s see if Dalton’s ready to call.
[00:06:34:12 – 00:06:40:16]
Tony
Actually he’s asking, he’s in the chat room and he’s asking what the number is. Which is a good opportunity for me to give you the number.
[00:06:41:17 – 00:06:51:28]
Tony
If you would like to call in and leave some feedback. We have a voicemail set up. We’re actually going to be using it to take calls right now. At least a call from Dalton.
[00:06:51:28 – 00:07:05:00]
Tony
But you can call any time of the day or night and ask your question and have it played on the show more than likely. That number is 530-675-4102.
[00:07:05:00 – 00:07:10:07]
Tony
That’s 530-675-4102.
[00:07:10:07 – 00:07:20:09]
Tony
If you don’t want to call the voicemail you can send an email to motoroy at xjtalk.com. That’s motoroy
[00:07:20:09 – 00:07:22:01]
Tony
at xjtalk.com.
[00:07:22:01 – 00:07:25:22]
Tony
And we can read your question or comment on the show.
[00:07:25:22 – 00:07:28:14]
Tony
You know what Dalton?
[00:07:28:14 – 00:07:30:21]
Tony
I don’t think I have that set up where
[00:07:32:13 – 00:07:42:04]
Tony
it will actually ring through. I think you’ll go straight to voicemail because I wasn’t going to take calls tonight. If you want to put your phone number in the chat I’ll just give you a call.
[00:07:42:04 – 00:07:44:09]
Tony
He’s probably already gotten the voicemail and he’s
[00:07:45:14 – 00:07:47:29]
Tony
leaving a message saying “Hey, pick up!”
[00:07:47:29 – 00:07:50:12]
Tony
Yeah, it is going straight to voicemail.
[00:07:50:12 – 00:07:55:13]
Tony
For some strange reason I thought that I could just magically will it to
[00:07:57:10 – 00:08:01:11]
Tony
redirect to the home phone. And of course that’s not going to happen.
[00:08:01:11 – 00:08:02:17]
Tony
It’s going to require
[00:08:02:17 – 00:08:06:28]
Tony
me to do some typing and logging in and so on and so forth.
[00:08:06:28 – 00:08:12:09]
Tony
If you wanted to shoot me your number I can call you. So if you just put it in
[00:08:12:09 – 00:08:13:24]
Tony
chat,
[00:08:13:24 – 00:08:17:09]
Tony
if you don’t want to put it in chat that’s fine. I can
[00:08:19:18 – 00:08:20:12]
Tony
turn it
[00:08:20:12 – 00:08:24:08]
Tony
on when you call the 530 number it will come here.
[00:08:24:08 – 00:08:25:24]
Tony
You let me know what you want to do.
[00:08:25:24 – 00:08:30:01]
Tony
So it looks like the tires need to be replaced on the 99. It’s
[00:08:30:01 – 00:08:37:07]
Tony
okay. Oh and the air conditioner doesn’t work. I tried charging the air conditioner and I was unable to do so.
[00:08:37:07 – 00:08:43:17]
Tony
I’m going to be going over to a friend’s place this Saturday hopefully.
[00:08:43:17 – 00:08:57:18]
Tony
And we’re going to see what we can’t do with it. Replace some O-rings and need to go buy some R132? 132. I think it’s 132. I’m going to go buy some R132
[00:08:58:18 – 00:09:00:17]
Tony
before Saturday. So probably Friday.
[00:09:00:17 – 00:09:02:10]
Tony
And hopefully
[00:09:02:10 – 00:09:08:27]
Tony
all things will go well and my wife will have air conditioning on her 99.
[00:09:08:27 – 00:09:12:25]
Tony
I was talking to her about I pretty much have all the parts.
[00:09:12:25 – 00:09:19:05]
Tony
I got pretty much all the parts. Dalton says he’s going to have to take off.
[00:09:21:27 – 00:09:26:11]
Tony
So no call from Dalton tonight. He is a really nice,
[00:09:26:11 – 00:09:41:05]
Tony
keep forgetting what it’s called, the basket that goes on top of the Jeep where you can carry various, it’s really I guess like a luggage thing but several people put tires and thank you roof rack. It’s so simple.
[00:09:41:05 – 00:09:49:08]
Tony
Dalton built a roof rack and he doesn’t have a welder so he made it out of electrical conduit
[00:09:49:08 – 00:10:00:10]
Tony
using pre-bent 90 degree elbows and those little sleeves that have the screws so that you can connect the pipes together. And it worked out really nice.
[00:10:01:23 – 00:10:14:15]
Tony
He painted it black and he attached it to the existing roof rack on his Jeep Cherokee. And he says solid as rock. Very impressive because I think the total parts outlay
[00:10:14:15 – 00:10:23:05]
Tony
was $100. And it looks very similar to a basket that you would probably see for $300 or $400.
[00:10:24:28 – 00:10:35:11]
Tony
It was a bit of a risk on his part. I mean he had to think about it. He had to go buy the parts and then put it together and have it work out. But that’s kind of the fun of trying something like that is
[00:10:35:11 – 00:10:36:14]
Tony
getting
[00:10:37:15 – 00:10:39:26]
Tony
the stuff, putting it together and having it work out well.
[00:10:39:26 – 00:10:46:21]
Tony
So hats off to Dalton and you can see that build on xjtalk.com.
[00:10:46:21 – 00:10:55:23]
Tony
All you have to do is just jump over there and if you scroll down it’s at the very top of the articles which is towards the bottom of the front page.
[00:10:55:23 – 00:11:01:03]
Tony
So just go to www.xjtalk.com and you can see
[00:11:01:03 – 00:11:03:24]
Tony
Dalton 4×4’s
[00:11:03:24 – 00:11:08:09]
Tony
article about building a roof rack with no welding.
[00:11:08:09 – 00:11:15:05]
Tony
means pretty much anybody with minimal skills and $100 can have a roof rack
[00:11:15:05 – 00:11:16:10]
Tony
and
[00:11:16:10 – 00:11:18:01]
Tony
look like one of the
[00:11:18:01 – 00:11:25:13]
Tony
expensive roof racks that you might buy from Quadratec or one of the other sites,
[00:11:26:23 – 00:11:29:10]
Tony
even one of our vendors that carry roof racks.
[00:11:29:10 – 00:11:46:17]
Tony
So anyway, I’ll go back to the $19.99. I’m pretty excited about that. The paint was able to be rejuvenated and it actually looks pretty good. It passed the wife test as well after I got done with the buffing machine and the
[00:11:48:08 – 00:11:53:10]
Tony
polish, what do you call that stuff? Not rubbing compound. After I got done with a little,
[00:11:54:10 – 00:12:04:18]
Tony
I want to call it an orbital sander because it’s got a big buffing pad on it and it kind of moves around in an oblong pattern so you don’t get any
[00:12:04:18 – 00:12:14:22]
Tony
circular patterns in the paint. But it shined that up really well. It didn’t require very much effort either. Now I did eat through that
[00:12:14:22 – 00:12:26:17]
Tony
polishing pad that came with the unit before I could get done. I was working on the roof and I got about 2 feet, maybe 2 feet
[00:12:27:25 – 00:12:28:19]
Tony
from the back
[00:12:28:19 – 00:12:32:21]
Tony
in and about 2 feet from the front in on the roof.
[00:12:32:21 – 00:12:36:28]
Tony
So there’s a nice section up there on top that really looks bad.
[00:12:37:27 – 00:12:42:17]
Tony
But I got all the sides and the back hatch and the hood,
[00:12:43:23 – 00:12:46:15]
Tony
all that done. So it’s pretty shiny. It looks pretty good.
[00:12:46:15 – 00:12:50:05]
Tony
It looks a lot better than what it looked when I went over there
[00:12:51:10 – 00:12:52:05]
Tony
to test drive it.
[00:12:52:05 – 00:12:59:02]
Tony
So far I’m very happy with that. I’ll be a lot happier once the air conditioning is working and happier still
[00:12:59:02 – 00:13:03:01]
Tony
when we get some good tires on there. Oh, I think I was mentioning the lift kit.
[00:13:04:02 – 00:13:19:02]
Tony
Since I’ve been upgrading the 4.5″ Rough Country lift that I purchased and put on the 98 a few years ago, I guess it’s coming up on 3 years, maybe 4 years ago when I put that on there. I’ve upgraded
[00:13:19:02 – 00:13:23:22]
Tony
the upper and lower control arms with Ironman
[00:13:25:25 – 00:13:27:04]
Tony
Fab 4×4
[00:13:27:04 – 00:13:38:01]
Tony
control arms. And the leaf springs were originally out of leafs and I purchased some new leafs
[00:13:38:01 – 00:13:45:09]
Tony
to go on, which was always the intent. I just knew I couldn’t afford wheels, tires and lift all at the same time.
[00:13:45:09 – 00:13:51:03]
Tony
So I have a set of leafs that aren’t the greatest in the world, but they’re certainly good.
[00:13:51:03 – 00:13:57:16]
Tony
And I think out of everything that I have, I would need
[00:13:57:16 – 00:14:00:01]
Tony
shocks.
[00:14:00:01 – 00:14:03:04]
Tony
I would need some
[00:14:03:04 – 00:14:05:29]
Tony
shackles to go on the back
[00:14:05:29 – 00:14:19:23]
Tony
to actually get 4.5″ of lift in the back because the add-a-leaf only has a little bit of lift. It adds about 2″ of lift, I believe. And then the shackles, the Rough Country shackles, I add another 2.5″ to that to get to the 4.5″.
[00:14:19:23 – 00:14:37:16]
Tony
And I would need coil springs. Or I could use spacers, I suppose, but well, no, I couldn’t, not on the stock springs. But I was planning on going to 6.5″ on the 98, so I should have, and to do so, I was going to get 6.5″ Rough Country springs.
[00:14:37:16 – 00:14:54:15]
Tony
So with that, and like I said, the two rear shocks would all I would need, and actually I could upgrade the rear shocks that I have on the 98, and then I would have those. So really, probably for about $150, which would be the cost of the 6.5″ coil springs,
[00:14:54:15 – 00:14:57:01]
Tony
on the outside chance that I can’t find them used,
[00:14:58:17 – 00:15:08:16]
Tony
then I would have a 4.5″ lift for the 99. Now my wife, I asked her about, “Hey, would you mind if I put the 4.5″ lift on the 99?”
[00:15:08:16 – 00:15:15:20]
Tony
And she says, “Well, it’s so nice and quiet with the windows rolled up, you can actually have a conversation.”
[00:15:16:24 – 00:15:18:09]
Tony
And I laughed and I said, “Well,
[00:15:19:14 – 00:15:26:07]
Tony
the 98 is really loud because of the tires. I have the 32″ BFG mud tires.”
[00:15:27:04 – 00:15:33:02]
Tony
And she says, “Oh, well wouldn’t it look funny with a 4.5″ lift and regular tires?”
[00:15:33:02 – 00:15:36:21]
Tony
And I said, “Oh, you got a point there. It just might.”
[00:15:36:21 – 00:15:37:27]
Tony
So
[00:15:37:27 – 00:15:42:20]
Tony
today I was asking on the site, what’s the largest size tire,
[00:15:42:20 – 00:15:44:10]
Tony
as far as height goes,
[00:15:44:10 – 00:15:45:09]
Tony
or diameter,
[00:15:46:11 – 00:15:48:22]
Tony
that I could put on a stock
[00:15:48:22 – 00:15:53:25]
Tony
XJ without having to remove the flamethrower? Or cut the fenders.
[00:15:53:25 – 00:15:58:28]
Tony
And this isn’t an off-road vehicle, this is my wife’s
[00:15:58:28 – 00:16:03:22]
Tony
Jeep. It doesn’t mean it will never go off-road, but that’s not the purpose.
[00:16:03:22 – 00:16:04:14]
Tony
So,
[00:16:04:14 – 00:16:08:09]
Tony
and I was thinking it would be about a 30″ tire.
[00:16:08:09 – 00:16:11:27]
Tony
So my follow-up question to that was,
[00:16:11:27 – 00:16:15:01]
Tony
what’s the smallest tire you could put
[00:16:15:01 – 00:16:21:06]
Tony
on a Jeep XJ with a 4.5″ lift and not have it look silly?
[00:16:21:06 – 00:16:22:15]
Tony
And amazingly,
[00:16:22:15 – 00:16:25:00]
Tony
30″ tire came up again.
[00:16:26:07 – 00:16:28:02]
Tony
So what I might be doing
[00:16:28:02 – 00:16:44:17]
Tony
since I don’t have the coil springs and I really don’t have the money to buy coil springs, actually to go to the 6.5″ lift on the 98, it’s not just a simple matter of getting the coil springs. I also need to get a SYE slip-look yoke eliminator kit
[00:16:44:17 – 00:16:46:26]
Tony
before I can go to the 6.5″
[00:16:48:05 – 00:16:58:01]
Tony
on the 98. So it’s going to be the cost of the coil springs plus the cost of the SYE plus the cost of a front driveshaft.
[00:16:58:01 – 00:17:03:15]
Tony
I found a pretty nice SYE for an NP-242
[00:17:04:24 – 00:17:09:16]
Tony
with one of our vendors on XJTalk, Dirtbound Offroad.
[00:17:09:16 – 00:17:13:11]
Tony
For the 97, I believe it’s 97 plus
[00:17:15:20 – 00:17:16:06]
Tony
models,
[00:17:16:06 – 00:17:22:09]
Tony
I think his price is around $110, $118, $120 plus shipping.
[00:17:22:09 – 00:17:27:01]
Tony
And of course that doesn’t include a driveshaft. I think he does sell driveshafts as well.
[00:17:27:01 – 00:17:36:12]
Tony
I was originally going to go with the Tom Woods solution and one of the reasons why I hadn’t gone with it was because it was going to cost me around $400 to $500.
[00:17:37:18 – 00:17:49:22]
Tony
Now that would include a machined output shaft from Tom Woods that I would replace on the 242 and then take the one that I took out and send that back to him
[00:17:49:22 – 00:17:50:11]
Tony
and
[00:17:51:26 – 00:17:53:13]
Tony
get a core deposit back.
[00:17:53:13 – 00:17:58:06]
Tony
And he also sells you a very nice,
[00:17:58:06 – 00:18:02:22]
Tony
perfectly matched to your installation driveshaft.
[00:18:02:22 – 00:18:15:19]
Tony
But it has always, I love the idea of redundancy, and it has always intrigued me that there’s people out there using Hack and Tap, certainly on the NP-231. And
[00:18:16:15 – 00:18:19:16]
Tony
what they do is they use a front driveshaft.
[00:18:19:16 – 00:18:28:03]
Tony
And to me, this is such a wonderful idea because of the redundancy of having two exact driveshafts.
[00:18:28:03 – 00:18:29:00]
Tony
So
[00:18:30:04 – 00:18:36:00]
Tony
in a four-wheel drive, of course, especially with an SYE, you can get
[00:18:36:00 – 00:18:49:28]
Tony
yourself home or in an emergency situation you could lose a driveshaft and still be able to move forward and backwards too. But I mean, you’d still be able to get out of harm’s way.
[00:18:49:28 – 00:18:54:29]
Tony
Or if you’re off-road, you know, get it back to the road, get it back home,
[00:18:54:29 – 00:19:04:25]
Tony
do some work, whatever you need to do. Of course, I’m thinking an emergency situation is probably when most everything bad’s going to happen. So
[00:19:05:20 – 00:19:14:20]
Tony
although, whereas I do really, really like the Tom Woods stuff, I know he has very good stuff and it’s very, very much well worth the price.
[00:19:15:12 – 00:19:19:19]
Tony
I think I’m going to go with the dirt-bound off-road solution
[00:19:19:19 – 00:19:27:01]
Tony
on the SYE and go with that Hack and Tap and make use of a second front driveshaft.
[00:19:27:28 – 00:19:33:27]
Tony
Nothing like having, you know, two of the same and it just, it makes your options,
[00:19:33:27 – 00:19:37:03]
Tony
in my mind, it makes your options a little more
[00:19:38:11 – 00:19:38:23]
Tony
open.
[00:19:38:23 – 00:19:46:03]
Tony
And I think we all, we all face those situations where we need options from time to time.
[00:19:46:03 – 00:19:51:00]
Tony
And I perhaps worry a little too much. And one of the things I posted today was,
[00:19:51:28 – 00:19:57:25]
Tony
I posted up a poll about basically how do you determine whether or not you go wheeling?
[00:19:57:25 – 00:20:12:15]
Tony
And if you’re, if you’re an off-road vehicle that you go off to have, off-road to have fun in, if that’s your daily driver, one that gets you back and forth to work or to the grocery store or even drops the kids off at school,
[00:20:12:15 – 00:20:18:29]
Tony
how do you determine it is a good idea or a bad idea to go off-road? Now,
[00:20:18:29 – 00:20:21:17]
Tony
certainly people that have gone off-road,
[00:20:21:17 – 00:20:27:10]
Tony
know, a lot, have a very good feel for what they can and can’t get away with. I mean,
[00:20:28:11 – 00:20:39:19]
Tony
for those of us that have driven on the streets for years, we have a very high confidence of will I be able to get back and forth to where I’m going today?
[00:20:39:19 – 00:20:47:11]
Tony
I think a lot of my trepidation about taking my daily driver off-road is simply, I just haven’t done it that often.
[00:20:49:22 – 00:20:55:01]
Tony
I’ve gone three times in this vehicle, in the 98 vehicle, and it’s worked out very well.
[00:20:55:01 – 00:21:00:01]
Tony
The problem that I usually have is I get a little too caught up in the
[00:21:02:01 – 00:21:14:23]
Tony
fun of it and the challenge of some of the things. That’s how I bent the Rough Country track bar. I was trying to get up an embankment, and I tried and tried and even put it in,
[00:21:14:23 – 00:21:18:01]
Tony
I took it out of full-time four-wheel drive and put it in part-time.
[00:21:19:04 – 00:21:21:20]
Tony
Still couldn’t get up that embankment.
[00:21:23:21 – 00:21:44:01]
Tony
But I got to use the winch to get out of there, and that was fun too because, you know, that was another piece of equipment that I had purchased and put on the Jeep to use. And it certainly was nice knowing that I could get myself out of the situation, even if I couldn’t drive it up, drive up that embankment like one of the other XtricTalk members just had.
[00:21:44:01 – 00:21:53:19]
Tony
But, you know, that’s all part of it. You go out there, you try, and you see what your vehicle can do, and you also learn about
[00:21:53:19 – 00:21:57:22]
Tony
how to get up and over things
[00:21:57:22 – 00:22:07:20]
Tony
and what it’s capable of. And of what other modifications you might need to make to make it able to do more of the things you want it to do.
[00:22:07:20 – 00:22:16:09]
Tony
And the Jeep that did make it up the embankment in front of me had his Spydergos welded in the rear end of his Jeep.
[00:22:16:09 – 00:22:20:23]
Tony
So he certainly was working with a little more traction
[00:22:20:23 – 00:22:26:09]
Tony
than what I was, and that just encourages me a little bit more to
[00:22:27:10 – 00:22:38:15]
Tony
move towards a locking differential. And of course, my plan is to go, my plan like most of them is a high dollar plan, which is to go to an
[00:22:38:15 – 00:22:42:21]
Tony
ARB air locker,
[00:22:42:21 – 00:22:47:24]
Tony
since that gives you excellent on-road and off-road handling capabilities.
[00:22:47:24 – 00:23:00:24]
Tony
So that’s just, I guess it’s around $8, $9, I guess it’s closer to $1,000 after you throw in the ARB air pump, air compressor that goes with,
[00:23:00:24 – 00:23:03:17]
Tony
or that matches that air locker.
[00:23:03:17 – 00:23:04:14]
Tony
then
[00:23:04:14 – 00:23:11:04]
Tony
there’s probably, it probably would be another $300 or $400 to have the air locker installed,
[00:23:11:04 – 00:23:18:09]
Tony
because it requires the rear end ring opinion to be removed from the carrier and
[00:23:18:09 – 00:23:24:21]
Tony
on the air locker and then installed and adjusted so that it wouldn’t,
[00:23:24:21 – 00:23:27:16]
Tony
the ring opinion don’t disintegrate each other.
[00:23:27:16 – 00:23:30:28]
Tony
I never realized how critical and,
[00:23:34:07 – 00:23:39:08]
Tony
I was there whenever they put the 456 gears in my, in the front and rear axles.
[00:23:39:08 – 00:23:42:03]
Tony
And I was a little surprised how
[00:23:42:03 – 00:23:45:00]
Tony
complex that whole thing is.
[00:23:45:27 – 00:23:47:10]
Tony
How the critical
[00:23:47:10 – 00:23:55:06]
Tony
interface of those two things, how critical those things are so that it doesn’t, those two pieces of metal don’t tear each other up.
[00:23:55:06 – 00:24:01:12]
Tony
Or have pieces flying off of it because the stresses are too great, etc., etc.
[00:24:01:12 – 00:24:02:07]
Tony
So,
[00:24:02:07 – 00:24:09:00]
Tony
yeah, I don’t, I would like to know how to do that. And I know that it’s possible to learn it. I’m sure I’m capable of it.
[00:24:10:06 – 00:24:20:01]
Tony
Just, it would be, I don’t plan on doing it that much. I think it’d just be more expedient to have it, to have it done. But I would be looking at probably around $14, $1,500
[00:24:21:03 – 00:24:26:05]
Tony
just to put an air locker in the rear of my Jeep. But boy, it would be nice.
[00:24:26:05 – 00:24:28:15]
Tony
It probably would have been enough to get me up that hill.
[00:24:28:15 – 00:24:30:08]
Tony
And then of course later on,
[00:24:31:21 – 00:24:33:10]
Tony
I’ll get another air locker to go into the Dana 30.
[00:24:34:14 – 00:24:40:01]
Tony
Unfortunately, because the makeup of the Dana 30, it probably would require,
[00:24:41:09 – 00:24:48:29]
Tony
I mean I could get by with the axles that are there, but it probably would be the best thing to put in some chrome moly axles on the Dana 30.
[00:24:48:29 – 00:24:57:22]
Tony
I’ve pretty well settled down to the point now where when I replace the tires, I’m not going to go with 35s, I’ll go with 33s.
[00:24:57:22 – 00:24:58:27]
Tony
And be reasonable.
[00:24:59:21 – 00:25:00:09]
Tony
So,
[00:25:00:09 – 00:25:04:17]
Tony
the chrome moly axles locked on the Dana 30,
[00:25:06:05 – 00:25:11:29]
Tony
it should survive. It should survive most anything I could do to it. At least that’s what I’m reading and
[00:25:11:29 – 00:25:16:27]
Tony
what people keep telling me is a good thing to count on.
[00:25:16:27 – 00:25:22:18]
Tony
So we’ll see. And you know, that’s kind of a long-term thing anyway. I mean,
[00:25:22:18 – 00:25:25:00]
Tony
I don’t know how long that’s going to take.
[00:25:26:12 – 00:25:26:22]
Tony
If
[00:25:27:23 – 00:25:28:12]
Tony
engines keep
[00:25:28:12 – 00:25:32:28]
Tony
messing up like in the Mustang and then I have to go out and buy a
[00:25:32:28 – 00:25:39:23]
Tony
vehicle, it might be a long time before I could even get tires for the 98.
[00:25:39:23 – 00:25:48:22]
Tony
So, I’m going to take a quick break and see if I can get this phone line set up just on the outside chance that we might want to have somebody call in.
[00:25:48:22 – 00:25:51:26]
Tony
So we’ll be right back right after this.
[00:26:51:07 – 00:26:56:07]
Tony
I’m going to call in and boy, I just couldn’t type in the password and keep talking at the same time.
[00:26:57:15 – 00:27:00:20]
Tony
I’ve often said multitasking is an illusion.
[00:27:00:20 – 00:27:09:27]
Tony
I don’t think anybody can do more than one thing at a time. You can practice and I believe give the illusion of it, but I don’t think that
[00:27:09:27 – 00:27:11:29]
Tony
I don’t think anybody can do the
[00:27:11:29 – 00:27:18:21]
Tony
multitasking. I mean, right now I’m having a hard time just trying to update this thing so that the phone number will show.
[00:27:18:21 – 00:27:23:24]
Tony
So here we go. If you’d like to call in,
[00:27:23:24 – 00:27:36:18]
Tony
you can call in at the number that you see there on the screen. It is 530-675-4102, 530-675-4102,
[00:27:36:18 – 00:27:38:24]
Tony
or you can also call on Skype.
[00:27:38:24 – 00:27:40:28]
Tony
I think I got the Skype thing working right.
[00:27:40:28 – 00:27:45:02]
Tony
And Skype’s real easy. You just call xjtalk.com.
[00:27:45:02 – 00:27:57:11]
Tony
And I was kind of hoping that Jensen, XJ Talk member Jensen was going to call in tonight. He had sent me a private message and said he wanted to try out Skype. And I said, “Hey,
[00:27:57:11 – 00:27:59:08]
Tony
shows at 8 p.m. Central,
[00:27:59:08 – 00:28:00:19]
Tony
give me a call.
[00:28:00:19 – 00:28:02:20]
Tony
And we’ll just try that on the show.”
[00:28:02:20 – 00:28:22:22]
Tony
And I don’t know. He’s in Canada and I don’t know what, if their time is the same as our time here, they may be on the metric time up there. And I don’t know how that translates out into, you know, regular guide, the imperial time that we use. God’s time.
[00:28:22:22 – 00:28:23:25]
Tony
So let’s see.
[00:28:24:25 – 00:28:32:22]
Tony
Looks like Jeep 4×4 Hunter has joined. Hey, I hope that some of those answers that you got on the 89
[00:28:32:22 – 00:28:36:01]
Tony
that you were looking to buy off a Craigslist were helpful.
[00:28:36:01 – 00:28:43:09]
Tony
There were several people on there that I thought had some good input. Jeep 4×4 Hunter
[00:28:44:20 – 00:28:53:08]
Tony
was chatting with me on Facebook, which by the way, XJ Talks on Facebook. Just Facebook slash XJ Talk and friend us.
[00:28:53:08 – 00:29:00:27]
Tony
Anyway, we were chatting on Facebook and he said he was looking at a 1989 Jeep Cherokee here in the Houston area.
[00:29:00:27 – 00:29:15:14]
Tony
And I think the price tag on that thing was 2000 or best offer. And since I had just purchased a 1999 with 142,000 miles or $2,500,
[00:29:15:14 – 00:29:20:20]
Tony
I thought that might be a little high depending on what mods had been done to the 89.
[00:29:20:20 – 00:29:28:29]
Tony
Now, the only Jeep Cherokee that I’ve ever had is the 98. So I lean towards the 97 plus body styles.
[00:29:28:29 – 00:29:35:14]
Tony
And the 1999 is really one that I particularly like based on several modifications that
[00:29:36:16 – 00:29:42:25]
Tony
Chrysler Jeep made. It has some really nice…it kind of has the
[00:29:44:01 – 00:29:59:05]
Tony
best combination of the 97, 98, and 2000, 2001. But it doesn’t have some of the attractions like heads prone to cracking that I think happened on the 2000 and 2001.
[00:29:59:05 – 00:30:03:01]
Tony
So…and it has the nice…it
[00:30:03:01 – 00:30:04:17]
Tony
has the nice
[00:30:05:18 – 00:30:07:23]
Tony
intake that has a little better airflow.
[00:30:07:23 – 00:30:15:22]
Tony
Let’s see, Jensen called in. Maybe he was one of the guests that was listening. Let’s see what’s going on with Jensen. He’s giving me video, which you’re not going to be able to see.
[00:30:16:28 – 00:30:19:04]
Tony
So let’s see if we can get him on here.
[00:30:19:04 – 00:30:21:09]
Tony
Hey Jensen, thanks for calling in.
[00:30:23:11 – 00:30:24:07]
Jennsen
Hey, how’s it going?
[00:30:24:07 – 00:30:25:17]
Tony
Pretty good.
[00:30:25:17 – 00:30:30:01]
Tony
You may need to turn the audio down or…
[00:30:30:01 – 00:30:36:08]
Jennsen
So I might have a bit of an audio delay because I’ve got my speakers right beside my webcam.
[00:30:36:08 – 00:30:38:20]
Tony
Are you listening to the show?
[00:30:38:20 – 00:30:40:27]
Tony
you listening to the show?
[00:30:40:27 – 00:30:41:19]
Jennsen
Yeah, I am.
[00:30:41:19 – 00:30:47:29]
Tony
Okay, so you need to mute the audio of the show because that’s going to be a long delay and just listen on Skype.
[00:30:47:29 – 00:30:50:12]
Tony
That should get rid of most of the echo.
[00:30:50:12 – 00:30:53:02]
Jennsen
Give that a shot here. Just give me one second.
[00:30:53:02 – 00:30:56:08]
Tony
Yeah, the audio sounds pretty good. I can see Jensen’s
[00:30:57:10 – 00:31:08:10]
Tony
orange monster in the background, which again you guys can’t see. We may have to figure out how to feed the Skype videos over here to UStream. I think that would be kind of fun for people to see who was calling in.
[00:31:08:10 – 00:31:15:02]
Jennsen
I think so too. The shop’s kind of packed right now. I’ve got the Comanche to my left. I’ve got the big Jeep in the
[00:31:15:02 – 00:31:22:18]
Jennsen
shop doing all the upgrades. I’ve got the T-bird over the side and I think I still might end up with that other Comanche that I posted up on.
[00:31:22:18 – 00:31:23:15]
Tony
You know,
[00:31:24:28 – 00:31:35:03]
Tony
some of you guys may not know. Jensen posted up a poll and he found another Comanche MJ. He was asking, “Should I save it? I really don’t need another project.”
[00:31:36:29 – 00:31:47:04]
Tony
I knew it was going to be this way. Everybody voted, “Yeah, save it.” I think it was only eight votes, but everybody said, “Save it.” Nobody is going to be helping him work on it.
[00:31:49:04 – 00:32:02:28]
Tony
Nobody that voted is going to be storing it for him. He’s going to have to find a place to store it, plus come up with the money to buy it. At least in my answer, I tried to say, “I think you’re asking the wrong person. I get way too attached to my vehicles.”
[00:32:02:28 – 00:32:14:22]
Jennsen
Yeah, actually, we just had to write off our RV from snow damage over the winter. Even though it’s a $1,500 RV, I’m still finding myself rather attached to it after three years. It’s hard to let it go, so
[00:32:14:22 – 00:32:16:04]
Jennsen
get attached as well.
[00:32:16:04 – 00:32:42:27]
Tony
I think anybody that puts any kind of effort into a vehicle or enjoys the vehicle, you get an attachment to it. I don’t really even like that Mustang that my wife has been driving until the head, and I haven’t broken it down yet, so I don’t know if it’s a head gasket, intake gasket, or a cracked head. I don’t even drive that thing. It’s too low to the ground for me, but even at that, I don’t want to get rid of it. I would rather fix it.
[00:32:43:28 – 00:32:49:13]
Tony
I don’t know if I stated that earlier or not, but I’m actually going to be trying to fix that. I’m going to at least take it apart and see what’s wrong with it.
[00:32:49:13 – 00:32:58:25]
Jennsen
can appreciate that because I have an O2 Mustang sitting out front that’s been sitting for a year that we just haven’t been able to part with. We don’t drive it, don’t use it.
[00:33:00:24 – 00:33:11:16]
Jennsen
I actually got to the point of posting up on Kijiji, similar to Craigslist, got all the way to the point of hitting save ad, and I haven’t made it there yet.
[00:33:11:16 – 00:33:20:11]
Tony
I know what you mean. I’ve got a two-speed Taurus fan in the garage that I need to get rid of, and I haven’t even put that up yet. I’m not even attached to the
[00:33:20:11 – 00:33:24:01]
Tony
thing. That’d probably be $60 right there that I could put towards things.
[00:33:24:01 – 00:33:34:04]
Jennsen
I’d almost be embarrassed to pan the webcam around the garage with all the stuff I’ve collected that I just seem to need. I think I’m on the verge of hoarding.
[00:33:34:04 – 00:33:36:11]
Tony
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, but it’s a good hoarding.
[00:33:37:24 – 00:33:40:20]
Tony
I like what I’m seeing there. If you can
[00:33:40:20 – 00:33:50:05]
Jennsen
streamline the whole fleet down to Jeep stuff, I don’t think I’ll ever have a vehicle breakdown that I won’t have a part for for at least the next 10 years.
[00:33:50:05 – 00:34:09:27]
Tony
Well, see, that’s one of the reasons why whenever I went to get this Jeep, I had looked at some Mustangs. In my mind last week was, this vehicle is not, the Mustang is not worth fixing because it’s going to cost $500 for heads, it’s going to take my time to go in it, and even then there’s no guarantee that it’s going to work. It may require more time and effort and more money.
[00:34:09:27 – 00:34:13:21]
Tony
So I just said, “Hey, honey, Craig’s List, they’ve got
[00:34:15:04 – 00:34:22:06]
Tony
Mustangs for less than what it would cost for me to fix this one, but would you mind if I got a Jeep Cherokee?”
[00:34:22:06 – 00:34:27:21]
Tony
“Would you mind driving a Jeep Cherokee?” And she kind of laughs and goes, “No. Are you nuts?”
[00:34:27:21 – 00:34:46:06]
Tony
And I think what it is, is because of all the time and effort that I put into the 98, she says, “That’s your Jeep.” She doesn’t like driving it. I mean, she does like driving it, but she doesn’t because she doesn’t want to mess up the seats. And I don’t say anything to her. It’s just the way she is. She doesn’t adjust the mirrors. I say, “Adjust the mirrors. I want you to see. I don’t want you to run over somebody.”
[00:34:46:06 – 00:34:53:02]
Tony
So it worked out well, and I got her a 99, and I told her. I said, “I know how to work on the Jeep.”
[00:34:53:02 – 00:35:06:23]
Tony
And I got it one year different than what I’m used to, so it’s almost virtually identical. And now I’ve got parts, too, that I’ve taken off the 98 that I can put on the 99. So it works out really nice.
[00:35:06:23 – 00:35:12:17]
Jennsen
Well, you’ve got a great excuse to get a bigger lift for yours because you can reuse that one of hers, and then she can see better on traffic.
[00:35:12:17 – 00:35:15:02]
Tony
And she really likes that. She’s 5’2″.
[00:35:15:02 – 00:35:21:08]
Tony
And other than getting the back of her pants wet when she’s getting out of the 98, she likes sitting up high.
[00:35:21:08 – 00:35:38:11]
Jennsen
Yeah, I just recently threw the Iron Rock lift in my wife’s TJ as a surprise for her, and she loved driving what she calls it. She calls it a “Rosie Derivator,” but her other nickname for it is the “Tank.” And now since I’ve thrown that lift in, she loves it that much more.
[00:35:38:11 – 00:35:54:09]
Tony
It’s amazing to me, driving the 99, how low that is, and how small the vehicle feels. The vehicle feels really small, and it’s exactly the same size as the 98. The only difference is being off the ground.
[00:35:54:09 – 00:35:58:29]
Jennsen
So here’s an interesting question for you. Are your Cherokees listed on your
[00:36:00:02 – 00:36:01:23]
Jennsen
registration as station wagons?
[00:36:01:23 – 00:36:03:24]
Tony
No, I think they’re listed as trucks.
[00:36:03:24 – 00:36:10:13]
Tony
Well, I know the 98s. I haven’t gotten anything on the 99 yet because it’s only a week old to us.
[00:36:10:13 – 00:36:15:21]
Jennsen
Yeah, my 89, the big Jeep, the 89 is listed as an SUV.
[00:36:17:21 – 00:36:22:15]
Jennsen
The 93 is listed as a station wagon. The TJ is listed as a station wagon.
[00:36:22:15 – 00:36:23:28]
Tony
Oh, that’s pretty good.
[00:36:23:28 – 00:36:26:00]
Jennsen
They’re almost the same age as trucks.
[00:36:26:00 – 00:36:27:13]
Tony
I’d blame that on the Canadians.
[00:36:27:13 – 00:36:32:02]
Jennsen
You know what? We do do a little, a few things a little odd.
[00:36:33:19 – 00:36:38:04]
Jennsen
But you know what? The metric system, I don’t care what you say, it makes sense because it’s all by tens.
[00:36:39:24 – 00:36:46:16]
Tony
Well, I don’t know if you heard me talking about it a few minutes ago that we’re on a different time standard than you guys are because you’re using that metric time.
[00:36:46:16 – 00:36:48:08]
Jennsen
Yeah,
[00:36:48:08 – 00:36:52:10]
Jennsen
I’m on mountain. You’re central, so we have an hour time difference, I believe.
[00:36:53:02 – 00:36:56:25]
Tony
Yeah, I think that’s right because Pacific is, I think, two hour time difference.
[00:36:56:25 – 00:37:14:01]
Tony
Yeah, I like making that joke. There was an old Saturday night live routine back whenever the metric system was still a possibility in the United States. And they made a joke, and you’ve probably seen me talk about it on the site, about the metric clock, the Deca clock, instead of… Jesus.
[00:37:15:04 – 00:37:22:08]
Tony
So they had this whole skit about the Deca clock. You know, if the metric system is such a great idea, why don’t we tell time and metric?
[00:37:24:07 – 00:37:24:24]
Speaker 3
Yeah.
[00:37:24:24 – 00:37:30:13]
Tony
So that was the whole basis of my joke for the, you guys are on the different time, the metric time up there.
[00:37:30:13 – 00:37:39:24]
Tony
Well, I’m glad you got the chance to call in today, and it certainly, the, I mean, even with the video, the quality is very good. Audio quality is very good, yeah.
[00:37:39:24 – 00:37:48:10]
Jennsen
I mean, I’m out in the garage going through a wireless connection on probably a six year old Dell that has been designated as the garage computer.
[00:37:48:10 – 00:37:52:24]
Jennsen
So I can keep everybody up to date on some of the junk I’m working on and
[00:37:53:18 – 00:37:54:15]
Jennsen
where it’s going.
[00:37:54:15 – 00:38:13:15]
Tony
Well, the wireless, I mean, that’s very brave. You’re doing a really good job for wireless connection. Of course, that technology has improved significantly in the past years. I wanted to mention real quick Jensen sitting right next to the MJ, and he’s been doing some body work until he took out some frustrations on it recently. And keeping us up
[00:38:15:00 – 00:38:28:02]
Tony
to date on XJ Talk, and it’s been a very interesting build. Actually, the body work that he’s been doing, he’s been replacing a lot of the sections that have rusted in this thing. And this beautiful work, I mean, it’s
[00:38:29:10 – 00:38:38:25]
Tony
been a lot of fun watching that, and I know how difficult it is to take pictures while you work. And I just really want to thank you personally, at least
[00:38:41:03 – 00:38:49:02]
Tony
voice wise, for doing that, because it’s a lot of fun to see. And I know it’s not a lot of fun to have to stop and take pictures and
[00:38:50:18 – 00:38:51:25]
Tony
post those things up, so.
[00:38:51:25 – 00:39:03:05]
Jennsen
Well, I got to be honest, I mean that I’m on a lot of different forms, and I have been for a long time. And then one really nice thing about XJ Talk overall, the other ones is there’s a lot of really positive,
[00:39:03:05 – 00:39:11:12]
Jennsen
you know, comments. And when I get really frustrated and, you know, may or may not discipline a door to the point of death,
[00:39:13:16 – 00:39:29:00]
Jennsen
getting that little bit of feedback, and you have one of those really bad nights where, you know, you dig into the panel and you find rust behind rust behind you. And rust and what’s supposed to be a two hour job is a four hour job, then all of a sudden you read like six posts of people going, wow, you know, you’re doing a great job. It’s
[00:39:29:00 – 00:39:39:11]
Jennsen
a great motivator and it makes me feel a lot better about what I’m doing, not thinking I’m some nuts 34 year old in a garage rebuilding a truck that’s probably worth 50 bucks.
[00:39:39:11 – 00:39:40:17]
Tony
So,
[00:39:40:17 – 00:39:52:25]
Tony
no, it’s, it, well, you know, it’s like having a 12 year old vehicle. I’m driving around a 12 year old vehicle. There’s not that many Jeep Cherokees driving around the road, not like there used to be.
[00:39:52:25 – 00:40:04:09]
Tony
And I’m sure some people think that I’m nuts. Quite a bit older than you and I’m driving this thing with a hood scoop and it’s bright red and these big tires and a lift and all this crap.
[00:40:04:09 – 00:40:07:01]
Tony
Hell, I’ve even painted the front end parts red, but
[00:40:07:01 – 00:40:09:29]
Tony
it, it’s fun and it’s a, it’s a unique vehicle
[00:40:09:29 – 00:40:23:08]
Tony
and the MJ is even more so the command cheese, the Jeep trucks. I wish they had kept making those things. It’s a really nice, neat vehicle. I wish they had at least made them through the 97 body style changeover,
[00:40:23:08 – 00:40:23:27]
Tony
but
[00:40:23:27 – 00:40:24:18]
Jennsen
you know, it’s
[00:40:24:18 – 00:40:29:10]
Jennsen
the really interesting thing with the MJ is that I actually lost out to the Dakota.
[00:40:29:10 – 00:40:38:01]
Jennsen
And that baffles me because if you look at the drive train that they put into a command, she versus the drive and they put into a Dakota reliability wise. I mean,
[00:40:38:01 – 00:40:43:01]
Jennsen
which Chrysler person had their head up, you know, where to make that decision.
[00:40:43:01 – 00:40:51:29]
Jennsen
When you look at the command cheese that were produced versus the Dakotas that were produced, there’s way more command. She stole up alive and kicking, you know, percentage wise, they were very bad decision. I think.
[00:40:51:29 – 00:40:59:00]
Tony
Well, you know, again, we’ve all heard about things being engineered for obsolescence
[00:40:59:00 – 00:41:09:26]
Tony
and I don’t think it’s as bad as it used to be. And certainly vehicles are lasting longer these days than what they used to. But I think a lot of that has to do with the competition and the quality coming from Japan.
[00:41:09:26 – 00:41:21:22]
Tony
But it’s just like the 4.0. I mean, they got rid of the 4.0 because they couldn’t get the least from what I’ve heard, they couldn’t get the government mandated mop or gallon out of it.
[00:41:22:17 – 00:41:29:24]
Tony
And I personally, and I know this is going to rub some people the wrong way. I personally hate, hate the Jeep Liberty
[00:41:29:24 – 00:41:33:13]
Tony
because the Jeep Liberty replaced the Cherokee.
[00:41:33:13 – 00:41:37:26]
Tony
And the Jeep Liberty, in my mind, is a piece of
[00:41:37:26 – 00:41:41:27]
Tony
It’s a little bitty VW looking piece of
[00:41:41:27 – 00:41:44:26]
Tony
It’s underpowered and it’s ugly.
[00:41:44:26 – 00:41:55:18]
Jennsen
And I don’t think cars that you produced, like they’ve got those compasses and stuff like that. And then like, and again, someone might get pissed off who’d be saying this, but they put a Jeep logo on that.
[00:41:55:18 – 00:41:58:28]
Jennsen
They might as well take a knee on and put the Jeep logo across the front.
[00:41:58:28 – 00:41:59:08]
Tony
Yes.
[00:41:59:08 – 00:42:00:09]
Jennsen
That’s embarrassing.
[00:42:00:09 – 00:42:08:01]
Tony
That’s exactly what I was going to say. I’ve heard some very good things about the Jeep Compass, but it’s not, in my opinion, a Jeep.
[00:42:09:23 – 00:42:10:01]
Jennsen
No.
[00:42:11:04 – 00:42:11:23]
Jennsen
No, I mean,
[00:42:11:23 – 00:42:44:29]
Jennsen
you look at the way that they used to build them and I mean, look at my 93. It’s it did not have a great maintenance plan. I mean, it was a daily driver for, I think when I pulled the records on it, about eight people since 93, it’s got 550,000 kilometers on it, which I don’t know what that works out to a miles, probably 280, something like that. But I mean, huge mileage, original motor, original transmission. And the only reason why the T case is swapped is I stole it out of it when I was doing the body job, I put the big one back together.
[00:42:46:17 – 00:42:47:01]
Jennsen
I mean,
[00:42:47:01 – 00:42:48:11]
Jennsen
the body was shot,
[00:42:48:11 – 00:43:11:06]
Jennsen
but I, you know, I kind of, it was a gas station. Finally, I rolled in with the passenger side, pushed to the door or the door pushed to the side of the seat. And I looked at this truck and said, how much you want for you? He says you can have it off. I looked at it, the odometer and went, you went 535,000 kilometers and you’re still original. I have to fix you just to see how far you’ll actually go.
[00:43:11:06 – 00:43:21:03]
Jennsen
So, and we’ve got a four, the Ford fusion and the Mustang, they’re both getting sold and I’m actually going back to the 93 is my daily driver just to see how far I can push it.
[00:43:21:03 – 00:43:26:15]
Tony
Yeah, well, I was very happy that I got that 99 and I was happy because
[00:43:26:15 – 00:43:48:16]
Tony
I’ve gotten 12 or 13 years out of life of this 98 and, and the transmission’s going strong, the engine’s going strong. I mean, I’ve got the heat creep, but I could probably take the lift kit off and put the stock tires back on it and not have the highway heat, heat creep problem. I’m going to figure that out. And actually my transmission,
[00:43:48:16 – 00:43:51:24]
Tony
my BMW transmission temp gauge came in today.
[00:43:51:24 – 00:43:56:18]
Tony
So I’m going to be installing that to see how much heat I’m getting from the transmission.
[00:43:56:18 – 00:44:01:03]
Jennsen
Are you still running into the rad, like the factory trans cooler?
[00:44:01:03 – 00:44:27:17]
Tony
Yes. And one of the, one of the things I’m doing with this is because if you’ve, if you’ve noticed on my post, I’m a real nervous Nelly about doing things to the, to the Jeep that aren’t, that I can’t measure or aren’t proven. And even though I’ve had lots of people telling me it’s perfectly fine, especially if you have an aftermarket cooler transmission cooler on there, you can take it off the radiator, but I don’t want to do it. I don’t want to do it until I can measure the, the temp from the radiator.
[00:44:27:17 – 00:44:32:20]
Jennsen
Every one of my vehicles, like, I mean, every one that’s automatic,
[00:44:32:20 – 00:44:58:09]
Jennsen
that’s not currently under a warranty. The, the, it has immediately went away from the factory rad cooler to an aftermarket cooler. Now, the only thing I’ll tell you with like the AW4, I don’t, I’m not so familiar with the newer 98 and plus transmissions is they actually can run a little too cool. And it’s almost like having a shift kit. It’ll, it’ll hit pretty hard when, until it comes up to a temperature.
[00:44:58:09 – 00:45:15:21]
Tony
Yeah. And that was kind of my concern. It doesn’t get, doesn’t, you know, kind of surprised since you’re in the, the great white north and how cold it gets up there that you actually run without the radiator. I was concerned about that, doing that whenever we do get 30 degree temperatures here. And with the
[00:45:15:21 – 00:45:23:01]
Tony
being hooked up to the radiator and then I have the OEM transmission cooler on mine.
[00:45:23:01 – 00:45:42:12]
Tony
And then with that BMW cooler, the 30, like 35 degrees out, it shifts. You can tell it, it didn’t really shutter, but it hits hard like what you’re saying. And it doesn’t, doesn’t do it very long. It takes about, you know, maybe five minutes and then it’s fine. So I was a little concerned about removing it from the radiator altogether.
[00:45:43:10 – 00:45:50:02]
Jennsen
See, I’ve got mine so tight to the rad that I get a little bit of heat soak to kind of bring it up to temperature. But I mean, I’ve put the,
[00:45:51:17 – 00:46:02:20]
Jennsen
the temperature probe on it. And I mean, Tranny always measures a lot less than the, the, the rad temperature at, you know, operating. So I was happy with that,
[00:46:02:20 – 00:46:03:29]
Jennsen
you know, difference.
[00:46:03:29 – 00:46:06:00]
Tony
I’m sorry, how were you measuring the temperature?
[00:46:06:00 – 00:46:22:26]
Jennsen
I’ve got one of those laser temperature gauges. So I use it like when I mod the engines and stuff like that, I use it and run it down each individual cylinder on the exhaust manifold to make sure I’ve got an even burn that I’m not running lean in a cylinder or something like that. Because that burns, pisses up really quickly.
[00:46:22:26 – 00:46:23:08]
Tony
Right.
[00:46:23:08 – 00:46:26:20]
Tony
So how do you, how do you measure the transmission temperature though?
[00:46:26:20 – 00:46:28:17]
Jennsen
Well, I just went off the,
[00:46:28:17 – 00:46:40:22]
Jennsen
off the cooler itself. So the cooler’s got a certain temperature associated with the body of the cooler that it’s because it’s, it’s dissipating that heat. And I just move it up to the rad and see the difference between the two.
[00:46:40:22 – 00:46:47:13]
Tony
Gotcha. Yeah, because I remember scanning the BMW cooler and I was, I think it was around 170 when
[00:46:47:13 – 00:46:48:12]
Tony
I had it.
[00:46:48:12 – 00:46:52:17]
Jennsen
Find it, which one I’m using. As long as you can still hear me from here.
[00:46:52:17 – 00:47:11:09]
Tony
Yeah, actually I have one as well. It’s a Fluke that I bought off of Amazon. And that’s what I was using to see how hot the cooler was getting. I did not realize that that would be the same temp as what the fluid in the transmission was. I figured it would be some degrees off.
[00:47:11:09 – 00:47:23:29]
Jennsen
Well, it will be some degrees off, but it’s still going to, because both of them are dissipating heat, right? So it’s still going to give you an idea. You know, maybe your train needs 10 degrees warmer than what you’re reading on the outside. The engine will, the rad will be able to same.
[00:47:23:29 – 00:47:32:18]
Tony
Okay. Well, I’m going to put the gauge on it and then I’ll be able to monitor it. And right now the plan is to hook up the transmission gauge
[00:47:32:18 – 00:47:50:08]
Tony
and run it because I don’t currently have the BMW cooler on there. I had a leak and it was really strange because both hose clamps were loose and I don’t understand how they got loose. But anyway, I’ll probably put another, another hose clamp on there, just double it up and then hopefully that will solve the leak.
[00:47:50:08 – 00:47:56:16]
Tony
And also too, I removed it from being in front of the radiator out of the airflow since I was having the heat creep problem on the highway.
[00:47:56:16 – 00:47:58:18]
Tony
I wanted to remove that heat source
[00:47:58:18 – 00:48:14:20]
Tony
and I’ve actually installed it in the seven little slots that are in the bottom of the custom bumper. So it’s kind of at an angle, but it’s in the front. So it gets airflow as you’re moving down the road. There’s no fan flow of air through there.
[00:48:14:20 – 00:48:19:10]
Jennsen
When you start getting that heat creep, have you ever measured your fuel pressure on your intake rail?
[00:48:19:10 – 00:48:20:09]
Speaker 4
No.
[00:48:21:24 – 00:48:30:17]
Jennsen
Grab a, you can go down to pretty much any parts store, get a fuel pressure gauge, measure yourself at when you’re at cold startup, when you’re idling.
[00:48:30:17 – 00:48:37:23]
Jennsen
And then go for a drive and wait till your engine starts to creep and watch your fuel pressure because I know I fought with the big one
[00:48:37:23 – 00:48:45:29]
Jennsen
for a very long time of a similar heat creep where, you know, I get in and around the hundred on the gauge. And then it would start to climb up and then the
[00:48:47:13 – 00:48:54:11]
Jennsen
engine would actually start to run rough. And I thought it actually had something to do with the temperature, but it was actually my fuel pressure was dropping so much
[00:48:54:11 – 00:48:59:28]
Jennsen
that the engine was running lean causing the EGTs to go up, which meant the whole engine temperature came up.
[00:48:59:28 – 00:49:03:24]
Jennsen
And then because the fuel was so lean, it was actually starting to stutter.
[00:49:03:24 – 00:49:11:18]
Tony
Right. Mine runs fine. Well, I’ll take that back. Whenever it starts getting hot, when it starts running above the Magic 210,
[00:49:13:26 – 00:49:16:12]
Tony
you can feel it’s losing some performance.
[00:49:16:12 – 00:49:29:13]
Tony
And since I’ve put a lot of effort into the modifying the cooling system, even on the hottest days, it’s very peppy and I haven’t, I don’t feel that loss of performance.
[00:49:29:13 – 00:49:30:00]
Tony
I
[00:49:31:01 – 00:49:48:14]
Tony
really don’t notice it unless I get on. Well, I’ve fixed it except on the highway and on the highway with the air conditioner on, it gets too hot where it starts affecting performance and you can smell the heat. Once you get to where you’re going, you can smell it.
[00:49:48:14 – 00:49:53:27]
Jennsen
And that’s only with the AC on. You’ve got this second fan and it’s coming on properly?
[00:49:53:27 – 00:50:00:23]
Tony
Yes, I actually have a bypass on it. So that’s the thing I’ve done most recently, which helps, surprisingly.
[00:50:01:27 – 00:50:15:03]
Tony
I guess somebody had made the observation that it probably is with the electric fan off, even running at highway speeds, it’s probably acting as a block to the air flowing through that part of the radiator.
[00:50:15:03 – 00:50:27:00]
Tony
So whenever I bypass it, turn it on, now, even though it’s not going to be sucking the air through there faster than the air is being pushed through there, at least it’s not as impeding the airflow as much as it was.
[00:50:27:00 – 00:50:34:10]
Tony
Now, I don’t know how true that is, but I do see cooler temperatures with the electric fan on constantly at highway speeds.
[00:50:34:10 – 00:50:48:22]
Jennsen
Now, the other thing I read up one time, and I’ve never actually researched it because I run aftermarket fans on the big truck, but was that there were certain models of, I can’t remember if it was Grand Cherokee or certain Cherokees that actually had more fins on the fan.
[00:50:48:22 – 00:50:49:26]
Tony
Oh, that’s interesting.
[00:50:49:26 – 00:50:58:20]
Jennsen
So more fins, obviously higher airflow. I run two aftermarket cooling fans plus the stock Cherokee fan.
[00:50:58:20 – 00:51:01:06]
Jennsen
So I try to keep it really cool.
[00:51:01:06 – 00:51:38:16]
Tony
Yeah, well, I’m a big believer in that. Now, one of the things I did, I put in the heavy duty Grand Cherokee fan clutch sometime back, and it did make a difference at low speed. I mean, I can go on the trails during the middle of the summer, 95, 96, 97 degrees air temps, running the air conditioner, and with the Cal induction hood, high flow thermostat, high flow water pump, three core radiator, Grand Cherokee heavy duty clutch fan, you know, I’m fine. I don’t know. It might get up to where the,
[00:51:38:16 – 00:51:50:15]
Tony
well, before I had the fan bypass on it, it might get up hot enough for the electric fan to kick on, but then it goes right back down. So it operates perfectly fine at anything under about 50 miles an hour.
[00:51:50:15 – 00:52:13:08]
Tony
And it takes probably about 12 miles for it to start getting hot. So you have to be on the highway for a little while. So the things that I have done to the cooling system certainly have helped the heat creep problem. It’s just generating a little too much heat, and it probably will be, the solution probably will be removing the transmission from the radiator.
[00:52:13:08 – 00:52:18:21]
Tony
It’s borderline where the heat and the ability of the cooling system to handle it.
[00:52:18:21 – 00:52:20:14]
Jennsen
Have you re-geared your truck?
[00:52:20:14 – 00:52:23:12]
Tony
Oh, yeah. It’s 456 gears.
[00:52:26:23 – 00:52:35:17]
Jennsen
Yeah, I don’t know. That’s odd, because like all the times I’ve ever had heat issues in any Jeep, it’s always been at low speeds and never at high speeds.
[00:52:35:17 – 00:53:19:00]
Tony
Oh, yeah. I mean, that’s a very common issue with the Jeep Cherokees. And from my understanding is it has a lot to do with the way the Cherokee is designed because it has a very skinny nose. It doesn’t have a very tall radiator. So the surface area is very narrow. I think the air has a tendency, and this is another thing that I need to look at, is putting some sort of air dam or air block so that I can create more of a vacuum behind the radiator. Because I think that the airflow, especially at high speeds, has more of a tendency to go on top of the Jeep, and now with it lifted, and especially with that narrow bumper, front bumper that I have, it goes under.
[00:53:19:00 – 00:53:22:14]
Jennsen
Well, I mean, like a cowl hood is supposed
[00:53:24:05 – 00:53:27:16]
Jennsen
to draw air in as it wraps over the top. So
[00:53:27:16 – 00:53:32:12]
Jennsen
potentially by putting the cowl hood on, you might actually be causing two different airflow,
[00:53:32:12 – 00:53:38:05]
Jennsen
an airflow conflict, because you have air coming in from the top of the hood, which might be fighting
[00:53:38:05 – 00:53:41:23]
Jennsen
air coming in through the rad, causing turbulence in your engine bay.
[00:53:41:23 – 00:53:43:04]
Tony
That’s possible.
[00:53:43:04 – 00:53:50:01]
Jennsen
Because the cowl hood was originally designed at speed to hook the air in and pull it into a carburetor, but we obviously don’t have that.
[00:53:50:01 – 00:53:50:14]
Speaker 3
Right.
[00:53:50:14 – 00:53:58:25]
Jennsen
And I mean, at low speeds, it’s going to allow the heat to exhaust at the top, but maybe at high speed, it could be actually a deficit.
[00:53:58:25 – 00:54:48:03]
Tony
Well, I could always put a flap in there. I’d actually thought about taking an spare electric fan that I had, I think it’s a 1200 CFM fan, and actually bolting it in that opening that I have under the cap. And then using it manually turn it on and exhaust the air out of the engine bay while I’m at highway speeds and create a vacuum mechanically and see what that would do. And, you know, thinking about it, I think I have just a great opportunity to just burn the Jeep down if it would catch on fire and be exhausting, sucking air through there like that. But before I do that, I’m going to, I’m going to try a few of the things. And one of those things may include putting a mechanical
[00:54:49:27 – 00:54:52:12]
Tony
door so that I can close off the back of that
[00:54:54:07 – 00:54:58:00]
Tony
cowl induction scope and to see if that makes a difference.
[00:54:58:00 – 00:54:59:05]
Jennsen
Was it the
[00:54:59:05 – 00:55:02:12]
Jennsen
Pontiac GTOs that came with an electric flapper
[00:55:02:12 – 00:55:03:21]
Jennsen
on the VIN scoop?
[00:55:03:21 – 00:55:07:09]
Tony
I’m sure somebody did. I mean, it makes too much sense.
[00:55:07:09 – 00:55:13:27]
Jennsen
Maybe someone out there, I know there’s like four people watching right now, maybe someone out there knows, I don’t know if they’re logged in to be able to post up, but
[00:55:13:27 – 00:55:15:15]
Jennsen
it’s an interesting thought.
[00:55:15:15 – 00:55:18:16]
Jennsen
Oh, I mean, a lot of the stuff that everyone’s doing is kind of
[00:55:18:16 – 00:55:25:03]
Jennsen
try it and see if it works and then post up and let each other know so we don’t all make the same mistakes.
[00:55:25:03 – 00:55:49:16]
Tony
Yeah, that’s exactly what I’m trying to do. And I know there’s actually several people that are having the heat creep problem, and one of them posted up here recently, he’s got the 35-inch tires. I had actually thought that part of the reason why I may be having the heat creep problem on the highway is because of the 32-inch tires and the 456 gears. Because if I go down the highway at 80 miles an hour, that’s 3000 RPM.
[00:55:49:16 – 00:56:04:08]
Tony
And I was thinking if I got 35s, it’s going to drop the RPM range back down very close to the stock RPM range at that speed. But this guy, 456 gears, 35-inch tires, 4.0,
[00:56:04:08 – 00:56:06:06]
Tony
a heat creep problem. So,
[00:56:06:06 – 00:56:11:02]
Tony
you know, just because it doesn’t work on his doesn’t mean it wouldn’t work on mine, but at least
[00:56:11:02 – 00:56:29:13]
Tony
it tells me that that’s probably a dead avenue that I probably need to figure out exactly what the right thing is for my setup. Let me just say real quick, I don’t know, well, this was quite a bit a while ago, I just noticed, sorry Jeep 4×400, he had asked a question here in the chat room.
[00:56:29:13 – 00:56:32:24]
Tony
He wanted to know what you think of the 1989
[00:56:34:11 – 00:56:41:19]
Tony
Jeep Cherokees because he’s looking at one here in Houston on Craig’s list for $2000. I don’t know if you saw that post up on XJ Talks.
[00:56:41:19 – 00:56:53:09]
Jennsen
Yeah, I did. I apologize. I’ve been so swamp busy that I haven’t been able to post up as much because the economy’s obviously picked much up here in Alberta with the oil field and I do the welding side of it. So
[00:56:53:09 – 00:56:59:18]
Jennsen
I supply a lot of companies with their products, so it’s been a little crazy, but the 89 honestly,
[00:57:00:18 – 00:57:08:24]
Jennsen
there’s a couple key features of each one that I found. I mean, the 98-01 has the strongest chassis that you’ll get,
[00:57:08:24 – 00:57:09:25]
Jennsen
hands down.
[00:57:11:11 – 00:57:16:19]
Jennsen
The earlier, like Renix style ones, they didn’t have as much power,
[00:57:16:19 – 00:57:23:14]
Jennsen
but the body life on them, usually like when you get into the rest belts, I find that they don’t rest as much as the
[00:57:23:14 – 00:57:25:03]
Jennsen
92 and newer.
[00:57:25:03 – 00:57:26:02]
Jennsen
So
[00:57:27:14 – 00:57:34:18]
Jennsen
it’s kind of a toss up. I mean, if you don’t mind doing a little bit of rest repair, because I know like the 93 that I have was horrible for rest.
[00:57:34:18 – 00:57:39:16]
Jennsen
Ninety five is horrible for rest, especially in the floors and the a pillar at the top.
[00:57:39:16 – 00:57:47:21]
Jennsen
But I mean, my 89, I beat the absolute start out of it since the day I bought it. I paid $200 for it
[00:57:47:21 – 00:57:58:22]
Jennsen
and I’ve been building it for six, seven years now and it’s still going strong. I have replaced the engine with a 95 engine, but I kept the Renix system.
[00:57:58:22 – 00:58:10:11]
Jennsen
There’s a few issues with the Renix, depending if it’s a sticker and auto, but I mean nothing you can’t get around. And for a starter Jeep, like your first Jeep that you’re going to go out and start pounding on, they’re really simple to work on.
[00:58:13:04 – 00:58:12:21]
Tony
Well, the 98,
[00:58:13:26 – 00:58:14:21]
Tony
I was
[00:58:15:23 – 00:58:17:14]
Tony
real happy how simple it was too.
[00:58:18:22 – 00:58:38:00]
Tony
So I was a little concerned about the price because it does, the one that he’s looking at does have a four and a half inch lift and it does have 33 inch tires, I believe. And the Craigslist ad says there are other mods, but he doesn’t go into them. But I was a little concerned that $2,000 for an 89 was a bit high.
[00:58:38:00 – 00:58:39:28]
Jennsen
What’s mileage on it?
[00:58:39:28 – 00:58:42:03]
Tony
I don’t recall.
[00:58:43:17 – 00:58:49:14]
Tony
Jeep 4×400, did you happen to know what the mileage is? I don’t remember if he had said it in the Craigslist post.
[00:58:49:14 – 00:58:52:05]
Jennsen
I don’t know now. IDK. Yeah.
[00:58:52:05 – 00:58:53:00]
Jennsen
I mean,
[00:58:54:10 – 00:59:00:25]
Jennsen
I’ve got a kind of a rule of thumb when I’m buying a used vehicle that I’m kind of unconcerned, like I have some concerns with.
[00:59:00:25 – 00:59:07:17]
Jennsen
My rule of thumb is I have to be able to look at the vehicle, look at every single good part that I know that’s a good part
[00:59:07:17 – 00:59:14:04]
Jennsen
and tally it up in my head. If I have to sell this used and someone’s going to low ball me, what are those parts worth?
[00:59:14:04 – 00:59:24:23]
Jennsen
So I mean a four and a half inch lift, depending on what quality, how many dollars is that worth if you had to flog it on Craigslist, you know, XJ talk, another site kind of thing.
[00:59:24:23 – 00:59:31:29]
Jennsen
How much are the tires worth? How much the rims worth? What can you get to the motor trends? Can you recover your money if you bought a pile?
[00:59:31:29 – 00:59:42:13]
Jennsen
So I mean, again, looking at that command sheet, I’m going to go back to that 90 command sheet, it’s a four cylinder command sheet, five speed, two wheel drive. They want $420 for
[00:59:42:13 – 00:59:46:22]
Jennsen
It’s got four brand new tires. I know I can turn around and sell the rims and tires for $200 because
[00:59:47:29 – 00:59:49:02]
Jennsen
they’re brand spanking new.
[00:59:50:05 – 00:59:57:28]
Jennsen
The motor’s got 160,000 clicks on it. I can definitely get 200 bucks for it. A four cylinder tranny that actually still shifts is a miracle.
[00:59:57:28 – 01:00:03:14]
Jennsen
So I mean, you get $250 for that. So I know I’ll be in the green if that truck was a complete pile and I had to kill it.
[01:00:03:14 – 01:00:06:06]
Jennsen
So that’s kind of my rule of thumb.
[01:00:06:06 – 01:00:11:15]
Jennsen
But I mean, an 89 four and a half inches of lift, you really got to start looking at the chassis too.
[01:00:11:15 – 01:00:17:10]
Jennsen
Because that’s an older truck. If it’s been wheeled for a while, if it doesn’t have any kind of reinforcements,
[01:00:17:10 – 01:00:22:12]
Jennsen
check the hatch, make sure it opens and closes easily. Look at all the door jams. Make sure they line up.
[01:00:24:15 – 01:00:25:22]
Jennsen
What are some other comp bad spots?
[01:00:25:22 – 01:00:37:22]
Jennsen
Anywhere where the floor meets the unibody, make sure you don’t have any cracks in the welds because I have chased down so many cracked welds and broken pieces in my big ones that have been beating it.
[01:00:38:23 – 01:00:41:20]
Jennsen
There’s been a couple of times where I’ve actually almost considered a new chassis.
[01:00:41:20 – 01:01:03:26]
Tony
Yeah, I can see how that would be. I can see how that would be not be a necessity, especially with the way you beat yours. Speaking of which, we’re a little over time, but I wanted to ask you about those motor mounts. Boy, those are some hell of a motor mount. I’m really surprised there are so many little nipples to attach to on the side of the 4.0. I didn’t realize that there was that many connection points.
[01:01:03:26 – 01:01:07:26]
Jennsen
You know, neither did I. And after last year, I was a little
[01:01:07:26 – 01:01:14:09]
Jennsen
broken hearted because when I saw my block and the bosses and I realized that I had cracked a few of them,
[01:01:14:09 – 01:01:23:22]
Jennsen
I thought I was going to have to rip the whole engine down, get another block, move it. Yeah, move the cam, machine a block for the big pistons, move the head, do all that work again.
[01:01:23:22 – 01:01:24:18]
Tony
Yeah, exactly.
[01:01:24:18 – 01:01:32:00]
Jennsen
And I did some searching and I came across Brown Dog after a recommendation from a guy who would run them in King of the Hammers from Pirate 4×4.
[01:01:32:00 – 01:01:38:22]
Jennsen
And I called them up and I said, “Look, guys, here’s what I’ve done. Here’s the issues that I’ve got.
[01:01:38:22 – 01:01:48:25]
Jennsen
What can I do? Can you solve my problem?” And it’s husband and wife team with their dog and they were so great to deal with. And
[01:01:48:25 – 01:01:51:28]
Jennsen
I mean, they spent a lot of time going through everything with me.
[01:01:51:28 – 01:01:58:22]
Jennsen
And, you know, when I went to go put them in and everything like that, I mean, it was the whole experience was nice. I mean,
[01:01:58:22 – 01:02:03:26]
Jennsen
I’m still looking at the manual sitting on my right in front of me on my shop desk here.
[01:02:03:26 – 01:02:04:21]
Jennsen
And
[01:02:06:04 – 01:02:19:19]
Jennsen
for the amount of time that it would have taken to make that, I don’t know how they do it without, you know, install Turner Profit and just the fact that they’re so passionate about what they do. It’s again, it’s one of those inspiring things. It’s like reading a thread about,
[01:02:19:19 – 01:02:24:03]
Jennsen
you know, someone commenting on your work. It was just a really good thing.
[01:02:24:03 – 01:02:36:24]
Tony
Well, it’s a beautiful product. I mean, the level of detail with a little this, you know, install this first and just the whole thing. It was, I don’t need anything like that. And I found myself wanting to buy some.
[01:02:36:24 – 01:02:39:21]
Jennsen
Well, you know, I never knew this was an issue
[01:02:39:21 – 01:02:46:20]
Jennsen
until it all of a sudden was upon me. Right. I mean, you take one. Like what mine was, I took a, I misjudged a rock
[01:02:46:20 – 01:02:48:22]
Jennsen
and it just missed my skid plate
[01:02:48:22 – 01:02:50:00]
Jennsen
and it caught the
[01:02:51:00 – 01:03:07:21]
Jennsen
exhaust just in front of me. And I was like, oh, I’m going to get out of the transmission pan and hit it. Lifted my drive train up enough that it actually pulled the bull and the block boss right out. I mean, I don’t everyone else can’t see this, but I mean, I’m holding the engine plate here and you can see a chunk of the block still bolted to it.
[01:03:07:21 – 01:03:15:13]
Jennsen
And believe it or not, when I was actually putting the driver side one and I had a broken bolt and when I went to pull it out, the boss cracked.
[01:03:15:13 – 01:03:22:19]
Jennsen
They’re not very strong. So, you know, I mean, if you can share the load of three bolts over seven or eight,
[01:03:22:19 – 01:03:30:26]
Jennsen
it makes sense. And if you look at the factory Jeep Mount, I mean, pretty much any Jeep out there, you’re going to have to change the driver side Mount because
[01:03:30:26 – 01:03:31:22]
Jennsen
they’re weak.
[01:03:31:22 – 01:03:36:11]
Tony
Yeah, I’ve already gone through two of them on the driver side.
[01:03:36:11 – 01:03:43:04]
Jennsen
And the nice thing with these guys, you can buy an amount to lift your engine up. So if you’ve got some clearance issues, you can get one that’s like a half inch taller.
[01:03:43:04 – 01:03:55:26]
Jennsen
So you can get your engine up just a little bit more. So if you’re running into difficulty with an oil pan or something along those lines. I mean, if anybody even has any questions, give them a call, talk to them for five minutes
[01:03:55:26 – 01:03:58:13]
Jennsen
and you’ll realize they’re the real deal. And
[01:03:58:13 – 01:04:05:03]
Jennsen
anybody I’ve talked to that I’ve seen one issue with one and they basically call it. I’ve said, hey, I have an issue. They sent him a new one the next day.
[01:04:05:03 – 01:04:10:18]
Tony
What was the name of the I mean, I know you have it in the post, but just so everybody could hear it on the podcast.
[01:04:10:18 – 01:04:17:07]
Jennsen
It’s a ground dog industries. And I think it’s ground dog ground dog industries.com.
[01:04:17:07 – 01:04:25:19]
Jennsen
And I’ll be honest. I mean, just just pick up the phone, call them. And if you have any concerns, there’ll be a leave you there just by talking with them.
[01:04:25:19 – 01:04:28:15]
Tony
And if you don’t mind me asking, how much did you pay for those?
[01:04:29:26 – 01:04:43:02]
Jennsen
Because it’s here’s an interesting thing. We raised the Jeep and we donate every single penny that we like win from the races. We do fundraisers, everything like that. We raise money for breast cancer.
[01:04:43:02 – 01:04:47:01]
Jennsen
Kind of for a couple of different reasons. My mom’s a three time survivor of breast cancer.
[01:04:47:01 – 01:04:58:20]
Jennsen
But also because generally of the four by four community in the media, the public, you get this redneck mentality where all we’re doing is going out, running over trees, burning up the mud, whatever.
[01:04:58:20 – 01:04:59:02]
Speaker 3
Right.
[01:04:59:02 – 01:05:06:04]
Jennsen
So we wanted to put a positive spin on it because we’re losing a lot of trails in Alberta. We lost two years ago, we lost hundreds of
[01:05:06:04 – 01:05:10:28]
Jennsen
like hundreds and hundreds of kilometers of trails because of the media and
[01:05:10:28 – 01:05:13:09]
Jennsen
and honestly because of a couple of bad eggs.
[01:05:13:09 – 01:05:14:05]
Tony
Oh, yeah, of course.
[01:05:14:05 – 01:05:16:04]
Jennsen
Turns out that the
[01:05:17:07 – 01:05:27:08]
Jennsen
the wife or the female partner, or however you want to put it, she was just diagnosed. And when she heard what we’re doing, they gave us, they actually helped us out a lot.
[01:05:27:08 – 01:05:28:29]
Jennsen
So they gave us quite a
[01:05:28:29 – 01:05:30:06]
Jennsen
quite a discount
[01:05:30:06 – 01:05:37:24]
Jennsen
because we don’t make any money off the truck. In fact, it actually costs us boatloads every year to go out and race it.
[01:05:37:24 – 01:05:38:14]
Tony
Oh, sure.
[01:05:38:14 – 01:05:40:24]
Jennsen
Prize money, because we donate it all.
[01:05:40:24 – 01:05:46:03]
Tony
Well, actually, what I what I meant to ask was how much are they initially how much did you pay?
[01:05:46:03 – 01:05:48:28]
Jennsen
I think they’re about 330 bucks for a full set.
[01:05:48:28 – 01:05:53:06]
Jennsen
So you look at the time to steal the mounts, the powder coating.
[01:05:53:06 – 01:05:56:05]
Jennsen
Unless you’re spending these things off on a pretty
[01:05:56:05 – 01:05:57:18]
Jennsen
quick rate, you
[01:05:57:18 – 01:06:04:02]
Jennsen
you’re never going to do it yourself. I mean, I’ve got a plasma cutter, take big stick, everything in the garage.
[01:06:04:02 – 01:06:07:15]
Jennsen
By the time I went through an engineer, figured it all out, did it.
[01:06:07:15 – 01:06:10:21]
Jennsen
I would have spent triple that to make them.
[01:06:10:21 – 01:06:16:14]
Tony
Sure. Just just from your time and. That’s the time. Yeah.
[01:06:16:14 – 01:06:20:08]
Jennsen
And we’re on the 30 day countdown on the on the race. So
[01:06:20:08 – 01:06:26:16]
Jennsen
and I’m I just put buckets in for the the the forelink. So time is definitely an issue.
[01:06:26:16 – 01:06:33:19]
Tony
Well, I had actually asked you in the post and we have a kind of a hard time getting a hold of one another. I don’t know if it’s time difference or
[01:06:34:27 – 01:06:52:04]
Tony
the time that I’m on the computer and you’re on the computer. So let me just ask you here. You had mentioned about XJ talk sticker for your for your Jeep and actually had posted up a picture of the the die coming. Yeah, the one on the tailgate. And I had put in the post. I said, well,
[01:06:53:21 – 01:07:04:24]
Tony
I can get you some eight by twenties like what I have on my phone. I Jeep if you have a place to put them if that’s too big and also, too, I didn’t know what kind of time frame I had, which I think you just said you got 30 days.
[01:07:04:24 – 01:07:07:14]
Jennsen
Yeah, like the race is July 1st weekend.
[01:07:09:07 – 01:07:11:19]
Jennsen
Eight by twenty. That’s all the game. You
[01:07:11:19 – 01:07:14:12]
Jennsen
give me that crazy standard talk.
[01:07:15:07 – 01:07:17:19]
Tony
Oh, oh, yeah. I forgot that
[01:07:17:19 – 01:07:20:09]
Tony
metric system again. See if you guys are good with the program.
[01:07:20:09 – 01:07:21:18]
Jennsen
Twelve inches a foot.
[01:07:21:18 – 01:07:22:05]
Tony
Yes.
[01:07:22:05 – 01:07:25:14]
Jennsen
So eight by twenty. Yeah, I can fit that on the trucks.
[01:07:26:08 – 01:07:33:01]
Jennsen
It’ll be on the roof or one of the side glass or I can’t put anything down the side because I ran a line the whole truck.
[01:07:33:01 – 01:07:36:27]
Jennsen
But I’ll definitely get it on there where we need the hood scoop.
[01:07:36:27 – 01:07:46:18]
Tony
Well, I have I have some half that size now. I was just thinking, you know, bigger is better, especially, you know, from Texas. Everything’s bigger in Texas.
[01:07:46:18 – 01:07:50:05]
Jennsen
But if in Alberta, the Canadian taxes, right?
[01:07:50:05 – 01:07:51:13]
Tony
OK.
[01:07:52:27 – 01:08:09:12]
Tony
But if if if one half that size would work better, I can. And I was only saying two of the eight by twenties because one is like 75 percent the cost of two. I can get I can get two for, you know, a lot cheaper.
[01:08:09:12 – 01:08:22:20]
Tony
So I can if you’d rather have one half the size, I’m just thinking there’s this here’s this radical looking. Jeep XJ. It’s in a race. It’s bright orange. How big an XJ talk sticker can I get on there?
[01:08:26:01 – 01:08:35:10]
Jennsen
Well, I’ve given away the roof to a friend of mine that runs an auto record because he figures it would be the best advertising because he’s got his money. I’m going to put it on its side again this year.
[01:08:35:10 – 01:08:40:22]
Jennsen
But the hood scoop could definitely fit it. And I think it might 20 would fit the
[01:08:41:17 – 01:08:47:28]
Jennsen
rear doors on the glass. And honestly, if I have to look through the back glass, I’m not doing the right thing in the race.
[01:08:49:01 – 01:08:49:17]
Jennsen
So
[01:08:49:17 – 01:08:53:22]
Jennsen
well, and I got some other ones. Let me know. I’ll get them on there for sure for you.
[01:08:53:22 – 01:08:56:26]
Tony
Yeah, I wasn’t going to ask to put them on because I mean,
[01:08:56:26 – 01:08:58:17]
Tony
I don’t have any money.
[01:08:59:22 – 01:09:43:02]
Tony
And and that I know that it’s that’s the that’s the nice thing about going racing and putting your time and effort into these things is that you can either get donations or get money to help you do the race. So I didn’t want to be so bold to say, Hey, can you put this on your Jeep? So after you had asked me about it a couple of times, I’m thinking, Yeah, I’d love to have the XJ talk sticker on there. So I just want to let you know where I was coming from. I wasn’t trying to get something for nothing. I appreciate your I appreciate your your offer because I think that all the time and effort that you put into that you should get a lot more than some some minor Jeep Cherokee website free sticker.
[01:09:44:02 – 01:09:58:22]
Jennsen
You know what, it’s all about promoting the sport, getting other people’s interested involved and making sure that they’re aware of the trails and what’s happening out there and who’s doing the cleanups and who’s doing, you know, the maintenance on them.
[01:09:58:22 – 01:10:05:01]
Jennsen
We really need to put a positive spin in the positive light on four wheeling. Yeah. So don’t get,
[01:10:05:01 – 01:10:09:17]
Jennsen
you know, the bad media because it’s going to take our trails away. And then what are we going to do? We’re going to go
[01:10:09:17 – 01:10:11:13]
Jennsen
call shopping carts at Walmart.
[01:10:11:13 – 01:10:11:24]
Tony
I mean,
[01:10:12:23 – 01:10:14:01]
Tony
yep, be out there
[01:10:15:15 – 01:10:29:10]
Tony
articulating on the medians. Yeah, I was and I meant I meant to mention this earlier, you know, we can do some stuff on XJ talk about the the breast cancer stuff. Certainly things in the notices,
[01:10:30:18 – 01:10:54:19]
Tony
advertisement for, you know, some banners about the race you’re going to be in how to donate and so on and so forth. So, you know, let’s let’s let’s get together and work on that. I mean, I think that’s a very worthy cause. I mean, I don’t think anybody likes breast cancer. Oh, and I meant to tell you earlier, when you said your mom was a three time survivor. I’m very sorry to hear that. But yet I’m very glad to hear that she’s she’s, you know, making it through and that
[01:10:54:19 – 01:10:58:12]
Tony
that can’t be a good thing. I lost my dad to lung cancer.
[01:10:58:12 – 01:11:07:06]
Tony
Over 20 years ago, and he passed away on Father’s Day. So it is not a good thing. And
[01:11:08:20 – 01:11:15:22]
Tony
if he had, if he had quit smoking back in 72 when I tried to get him to when I was very young, I’m sure he would still be here today.
[01:11:15:22 – 01:11:22:29]
Tony
But those are those are choices that we all make. And I don’t do not believe that is anything that’s attributed to breast cancer.
[01:11:22:29 – 01:11:23:21]
Jennsen
Yeah,
[01:11:24:23 – 01:11:25:28]
Jennsen
the breast cancer, you know,
[01:11:25:28 – 01:11:36:04]
Jennsen
it’s it’s funny, you know, you mentioned doing something that could help one thing my wife is looking for. It’ll be really cool to see if we can get some shirts from the US.
[01:11:36:04 – 01:11:41:09]
Jennsen
But she’s doing two quotes this year as a fundraiser because last year she cut her hair off and well,
[01:11:41:09 – 01:11:53:26]
Jennsen
there’s not quite enough to cut off anymore. But she’s doing two quotes. One she’s doing from brand new fabrics and doing the breast cancer ribbons and stuff like that, which we’re gonna throw up on eBay and do an auction for the event.
[01:11:53:26 – 01:12:04:20]
Jennsen
The other one we’re gonna auction off at the event. And what we’re looking for is old four by four t shirts that aren’t too badly stained or torn. And she’s actually gonna build a quilt out of all the logos and
[01:12:05:25 – 01:12:07:02]
Jennsen
emblems that are on it.
[01:12:07:02 – 01:12:11:01]
Jennsen
And she’s gonna auction that off actually at the event.
[01:12:11:01 – 01:12:22:27]
Jennsen
So I mean, I’m in the same boat as you we don’t have a whole bunch of money to spend on shipping and stuff like that. So I mean, if someone were able to send out some shirts that you know, from their local four by four club chapter or,
[01:12:22:27 – 01:12:26:26]
Jennsen
you know, something like that, we’d love to get them on there and build a whole quilt
[01:12:26:26 – 01:12:29:19]
Jennsen
out of them just as a little thing.
[01:12:29:19 – 01:12:46:09]
Tony
Sure, makes sense. Great idea. I mean, anything you it’s just like the website, I just tried to put some stuff together and put something that I’d have a little more control over how people interacted with one another, which, you know, earlier, you said that the XJ talk is a very friendly site. And that was my main goal.
[01:12:47:03 – 01:12:49:16]
Tony
Even though my wife says I’m a very mean person.
[01:12:50:16 – 01:12:50:18]
Jennsen
Well,
[01:12:52:00 – 01:12:56:07]
Jennsen
I can’t remember what was about. But I remember when I first joined,
[01:12:56:07 – 01:13:01:14]
Jennsen
I actually got a PM from you, because there was something I said that was a little maybe a little harsh, you know,
[01:13:01:14 – 01:13:07:10]
Jennsen
and I went, Oh, yeah, right. You know, I’m not on pirate right now. I’ve got to make sure, you know, well,
[01:13:07:10 – 01:13:25:04]
Tony
if I remember correctly, I tried to come across very light on that, because I didn’t want to come across harsh, because that’s the whole goal of XJ talk that everybody has can get in there and say what they what they need to say, but just do it in a respectful manner.
[01:13:26:04 – 01:13:26:10]
Jennsen
Yeah.
[01:13:26:10 – 01:13:34:05]
Jennsen
And the other thing, hard thing is, you know, when you’re when you’re posting on a forum, the way someone reads it from the way you were trying to explain it, yes,
[01:13:34:05 – 01:13:39:01]
Jennsen
two totally different things. And you know what, I’m not going to do that. But it can totally be taken the wrong way.
[01:13:39:01 – 01:13:52:26]
Tony
Yes, I got burned so many times working in it with my email messages, because I’m a very logical to the point type person and, and that that rubs some people the wrong way, even though technically what I said was fine.
[01:13:52:26 – 01:14:03:08]
Tony
So I’ve kind of learned, I’ve been on the other side of it. So I’ve kind of learned through a lot of hard knocks about that. And that’s one of the reasons why I use so many goofy
[01:14:04:11 – 01:14:10:17]
Tony
icons. Those emotion cons, so I can try to get across that I’m just kidding. I’m just joking, because I know how direct I can be.
[01:14:10:17 – 01:14:14:12]
Jennsen
Yeah, yeah, I can appreciate that. Absolutely.
[01:14:14:12 – 01:14:23:24]
Jennsen
So I don’t know if Jeep four by four hunters still on I don’t know if he’s if you heard everything we said, and if he’s digging the answer or not.
[01:14:23:24 – 01:14:26:29]
Jennsen
But I mean, if he’s willing to go and get more photos of it.
[01:14:26:29 – 01:14:30:01]
Jennsen
I mean, I’m sure we’d all be able to help him pick out a good one.
[01:14:30:01 – 01:14:30:25]
Speaker 4
Oh, absolutely.
[01:14:30:25 – 01:14:34:29]
Jennsen
I meant to mention to you, five, you say $500 for Mustang heads.
[01:14:34:29 – 01:14:41:27]
Tony
That’s what I was told last week during the during the chat. It was a remand remanufactured heads.
[01:14:41:27 – 01:14:48:03]
Jennsen
I don’t know, like, my local yard, I could probably walk in by a whole engine for 300 bucks.
[01:14:48:03 – 01:14:52:06]
Tony
Yeah, these would be I mean, valves, the valve job,
[01:14:53:06 – 01:14:54:06]
Tony
complete heads,
[01:14:54:06 – 01:15:02:18]
Tony
to complete heads for $500 they were remanufactured. But talking to the the other admin on x3 talk, he does a lot of
[01:15:03:29 – 01:15:15:10]
Tony
engine type work, auto auto work, he says that it’s a good chance that I may just have a warped head that it’s probably not cracked, I may not even have to have it have it milled.
[01:15:15:10 – 01:15:18:07]
Tony
I just need to check it. So what I’m going to
[01:15:18:07 – 01:15:20:03]
Jennsen
do, it’s warped, I’d still plan it.
[01:15:20:03 – 01:15:29:11]
Tony
No, of course, but he was saying it may not be warped. It may just be a blown head gasket. So basically, it’s one of those situations where you just don’t know till you get into it.
[01:15:29:11 – 01:15:45:19]
Tony
So I’m just going to have to take it apart and and see and I think that I read a recent post and it’s not a local price, but it I don’t think it should be that far off that somebody said machine shops will will mill the mill those heads for 100 bucks, $50 apiece.
[01:15:45:19 – 01:15:47:05]
Tony
And so yeah,
[01:15:47:05 – 01:15:49:15]
Tony
and another $50 for saying,
[01:15:49:15 – 01:15:58:09]
Jennsen
you’ve got 100 bucks apiece, there’s 200 bucks in your heads, you haven’t even popped them apart yet, then you’re going to be 150 bucks into an engine gasket kit.
[01:15:58:09 – 01:16:01:10]
Jennsen
And your time to do all that.
[01:16:01:10 – 01:16:08:03]
Jennsen
I just check around local yards, see what they have for a low mileage 3.8 yard the motor out stick the new one in and flog it.
[01:16:08:03 – 01:16:18:18]
Tony
Yeah, well, I have personally, and this is my inexperience because the only time I’ve changed engines is when I’ve rebuilt them. And I haven’t done that since I was very young to give you an idea.
[01:16:18:18 – 01:16:22:20]
Tony
It was a 350 and a 327 Chevy 327.
[01:16:23:27 – 01:16:29:04]
Tony
I love that 327 up until the day I broke the one of the main. Anyway,
[01:16:30:19 – 01:17:01:16]
Tony
I have a really, really heavy foot. One of the reasons why I got into four wheel drives and trucks and stuff. So I wouldn’t drive around as fast. But anyway, no, no tickets. I was I had really good eyesight and learn very quickly how to avoid those situations. Mainly what it mainly what it is is you don’t drive fast for very, very long. You can burst and get it back down to acceptable and they just don’t mess with you even with that bright red Jeep. I don’t have any problems.
[01:17:01:16 – 01:17:04:06]
Tony
And I guarantee I don’t drive speed limit with that thing.
[01:17:04:06 – 01:17:11:02]
Tony
Hardly ever. Only time only time I drop speed limit is when I’m turning into the neighborhood. And that’s because there’s kids on the streets.
[01:17:11:02 – 01:17:21:19]
Tony
But anyway, but anyway, I have a I have a problem because of my experience with it of getting a junkyard engine. The way I look at it is I’m getting somebody else’s problem.
[01:17:21:19 – 01:17:30:19]
Tony
And I would rather do the work with the heads and the gaskets and stuff if no other reason so I could see it and have a better understanding of where I was.
[01:17:30:19 – 01:17:34:11]
Tony
But I appreciate what you’re saying and that that is a common solution that I do here.
[01:17:34:11 – 01:17:37:03]
Tony
Sounds
[01:17:41:09 – 01:17:42:07]
Tony
like the boss is there.
[01:17:42:07 – 01:17:47:08]
Tony
Okay, well, actually, we’re we’re over almost a half hour here. So
[01:17:47:08 – 01:18:00:19]
Tony
it’s about time to wrap this stuff up. It was great having Jensen call in and very interesting discussion. Actually, Jensen had responded to my request for co host
[01:18:02:01 – 01:18:09:10]
Tony
that I posted up on XJ talk. So if if you’re interested in being a co host here on the show,

[01:18:25:24 – 01:18:35:13]
Tony
even interview a guest. So I think it could be a lot of a lot more fun than hearing one guy ramble on. I mean, hearing two guys ramble on is always more interesting, right?
[01:18:37:07 – 01:18:45:09]
