Episode 978 – Liar! Liar! Cars on Fire?

Liar, liar, cars on fire?

Officials Raid Toyota Plant

Japanese officials raid a Toyota group plant after the company admitted cheating on engine testing

Toyota Industries Corp sold 11 million vehicles in 2023, that’s 11 million lies!  Toyota chair Akio Toyoda apologized and vowed to steer the company out of scandal and ensure the Japanese automaker’s group companies maintain their efforts to make a good car.

In April, a whistleblower exposed that Daihatsu Motor Corp., which makes small cars and is 100% owned by Toyota, had been cheating on its testing for decades. In 2022, Hino Motors, a truck maker that’s also part of the Toyota group, said it had systematically falsified emissions data dating back as far as 2003.

Infamously VW was caught cheating on their vehicle’s emissions, but also Fiat, Daimler, Opel, Renault, Hyundai, Nissan, Porsche, Skoda, BMW, and Chrysler Peugeot.  Recently Cummings will pay a 1.675 billion dollar fine for cheating their emissions.

You know who isn’t cheating in their emissions, Tesla, of course, if you do a little research the emissions happen before the electricity gets into the car.

Wagoneer S Officially Released

Jeep has revealed its first EV.  The electric Wagoneer “S”

Wagoneer S is expected to go on sale this fall.

600 hp, all-wheel drive.  0 to 60 in 2 seconds.  No mention of how far you can go on a charge, but it is rumored to be 400 (ish) miles.

Both driver and passenger get a screen.  No mention of a brake pedal for the passenger but I’m sure many, including a wife, would welcome one.  Especially during the 0 to 60 2 seconds launch speed.

It doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense, but the Wagoneer S is packed to the roof with electronic goodies.  All of these items take power and that’s power taken away from the drive train.  But I do love electronic goodies!

Oh, and no price has been released either.  I have to say the 400-mile rumored range has me impressed.  Also with GM and Ford pulling out, or back of EVs it’s a big deal that Jeep isn’t, they’re going full speed ahead!

Trail Tools

We have talked about some things to take with you on the trail.

Let’s focus on tools. We all love tools and that is also the problem.

And then you have how do you store the tools in your rig.

So first I would go through and take your wrench set and go through and find the sizes of your control arms, driveshafts, and your hubs.  Include tools for general maintenance on a trail.

Most of the time it’s only a couple of tools that you need.

Many times we carry way more tools than we need and then can’t figure out why our rig gets to be 6000 pounds.

Now how do you store tools, I like to use the tool rolls.

One of my favorites comes from Adventure Tool Company they do a good job of laying out everything in their rolls for your tools. There are a couple of other brands that I have depending on what I’m putting in them. For me they work better than an old-style big metal or plastic toolbox it keeps everything from the clinging and banging around.

There are a couple of special tools that you need to make sure you have the JL and I  think the JK uses a special bolt for your hub that takes a multi-point 13 mm socket.

I typically don’t buy multi-point sockets, but for that one reason, I have to buy some.

For the 36 mm socket you need to take out the front shafts on a JL.

If you still have the Razepa joint in a JL,  requires torque Head drivers to remove the joint.

Now every model will have a specific set of tools needed for that.

My tool kit most likely works on a CJ, you just need to work the tools down to what you need.
