Jeep Talk Show

A Show About Jeeps!

Episode 873 – Great Smoky Begins!

Great Smoky Mountain Jeep Invasion begins today!

Our guest acquisition person, Chris, will be there.  Chic Chat host Julieanne will be there.

How the Jeep Got Its Name

The origins of Jeep have been called “obscure,” but a good deal of that has been clarified through diligent research. The primary legend has the name coming from a slurring of “GP,” but it didn’t mean “General Purpose.” The “G” signified a Ford government contract vehicle and the “P” indicated the 80-inch wheelbase. Even though the Ford GP was the first jeep to reach GIs in large numbers in 1941, the General Purpose name wasn’t Army nomenclature in WWII and was only seen on obscure documents.

Eugene-the-Jeep, a character in the Popeye the Sailor comic strip by E.C. Segar debuted in 1936, was magical in his abilities and became a beloved character. The term “jeep” became known in the civilian world as describing something extraordinary. How Segar found the word and why he used it for the comic strip is still a mystery.

Publicity Stunt At The U.S. Capitol

The best-documented reference came out of a February 1941 publicity stunt. A Willys Quad was driven up the steps of the U.S. Capitol. Irving “Red” Housman, a Willys test driver was asked, “What is that thing?” “It’s a jeep,” he said. His answer was overheard by a syndicated newspaper columnist and seen all over the U.S. the next day. Even though many in the Army knew them as “peeps” and other names, the 1⁄4-ton 4×4 became “jeep” from that day forward.

What’s Up, with Larry? Your favorite part of your JL

Today I want to talk about something that plagues all the JL & JT owners.

We have a 2018 that we bought new, just like all jeeps of those models it also plagued.  Today we are going to trigger some people, thats right we are talking about the auxiliary battery which is one of the most misunderstood systems in the Jeep.

Now why is it misunderstood, First let’s remove it anytime you get in and it won’t start.  You get the yellow @ symbol that says charging system error.

Now We know there is a possible battery issue there.

But what if you have a wheel speed sensor issue or a cam phaser problem? There are a bunch of things that will trip the charging system light and are not charging-related.

Now I have fallen into the trap twice and changed the aux battery both times.

When you get the error, if you want to know what it is. You need to take it to the dealer, and the key point is don’t turn it off. The error message goes off when you turn it off.  It took some time with the dealer to get past that.

Don’t rush out and change that battery when you get the error.

Now there are two ways to change the battery,

Through the PCM on the top is the messy way.

If you remove the fender and go up through that area it’s much easier.  Thanks for showing me that way Bill.

We show both ways on our YouTube channel, jeepingmo.
