A Show About Jeeps!

Episode 770 – Gone is 60 seconds!

This Week in Jeep

High-End Jeeps and Others Stolen From Plant-Tracked Down

Back in Episode 581, we broke the story about six-figure Jeeps getting stolen directly from the parking lot of the assembly plant they were just built in. Brazen thefts, middle of the day in broad daylight type of thefts. Smashing gates and outrunning the cops type of thefts. This was no small-time heist, it was an organized ring that was well-informed and funded.

About a year later, we now have some clues as to where they may be going.

Customs agents in Spain have intercepted a large volume of smuggled stolen cars.

All going to the same destination.

The large increase in the volume of stolen cars last couple of years = more shipping container inspections. = more busts. (24 smuggled high-end vehicles in January alone)

The latest bust included a Jeep Wagoneer estimated to be worth over $90K

The total value of the latest bust = $2.6 mil in high-end vehicles

According to current stats, law enforcement in America, Europe, and Africa have recovered hundreds of stolen vehicles bound for West Africa over the last two years.

Sept of 2022 dozens of Wagoneers/ Grand Waggys and Mustangs were all stolen on the same day from factory plants.

What else has been going on in the US over the last couple of years that has raised questions of shady dealings with other countries?

Speaking of Busts….

Ya know I was honestly hoping there was more to this story. Two twenty-something car thieves stole a Jeep compass in Stafford NY and took authorities on a high-speed chase through two counties. Upon hearing this, I thought for sure there would have been a whole string of broken, damaged, and otherwise inoperable cop cars left in the wake of this stolen Jeep. I mean we’ve heard countless stories about how one Jeep or another seems to be able to thwart capture, elude, and disable multiple chase vehicles before finally giving up the ghost and the occupant(s) within. Not this time. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I have some sort of wish for harm to our men and women in law enforcement. But I do find it immensely entertaining to hear of Jeeps being used as escape vehicles. The two Jeep thieves in this story were eventually stopped with the use of spike strips. One fled the scene on foot but was captured moments later. Both have been charged with criminal possession of stolen property, reckless endangerment, unlawful fleeing of a police officer, obstructing governmental administration, and a number of vehicle and traffic violations.

Does any one particular Jeep escape vehicle story come to mind for any of you?
