Mentor a Newbie
In this Jeep Talk Show flagship episode, hosts Wendy, Larry, and Tony discuss the importance of mentoring newcomers to the Jeep community. They also reflect on the sad news of Don Alexander’s passing, a well-known figure in the Jeep world. Additionally, the team dives into Stellantis’ recent cost-cutting measures as sales continue to decline. With five episodes a week, make sure to subscribe so you never miss an exciting discussion!
Stellantis is taking “drastic measures” to shore up the Jeep and Ram parent’s finances, including a belt-tightening approach known internally as the “doghouse” that seeks to put stricter limits on external spending.
In a bold move to combat plummeting sales in the U.S., Stellantis — the parent company of automotive brands including Jeep, Dodge, Ram, and Chrysler— has announced that it will offer discounts on 2024 and older model-year vehicles through the end of the year.
The announcement comes as the company works to shrink its ballooning inventory over the coming months.
Stellantis is betting on a new lineup of electric vehicles to reignite interest and boost sales. This fall, Jeep will introduce its first global electric SUV, the Wagoneer S, starting at $71,995. A more budget-friendly Renegade EV is also coming, with pricing expected under $25,000.

Mentoring and honoring one of the greatest!
I love the Jeeping world; there is so much knowledge out there, sometimes not so good, but mostly really good information. As we wheel more we gain experience and I feel it’s part of our job to pass that info along when someone is new or perhaps isn’t aware. Being a mentor is not an easy task. It does take patience and it’s not for everyone.
Mentoring is being able to help that newbie at their level of understanding. Not just “telling” the newbie what they need to do, but rather helping them to understand why they need to do something. We run into this all the time teaching and leading runs. I’ve learned over the years that people, in general, learn several ways; some by doing, some by reading about it some by listening, and others by a combination of all these.
I was fortunate to have one of the best mentors in the off-roading industry. Of course, Bill, my husband, is right up there, but I’m talking about my time with Don Alexander. Being a mentor is really about taking someone who wants to learn (me) and helping them develop their skills and hone them. I became the wheeler I am today because of Don. His style of teaching, guiding, and patience was the perfect balance for me. I always felt like I could do anything behind the wheel and it was all possible. But more importantly, he took the time to explain “why” when it was needed and for me that was the key. Don knew how to teach but he could “do”. He himself was an amazing wheeler. The loss of his kindness and knowledge for anyone who knew him is felt throughout this industry and all the other things had been involved with. I will always remember our trail runs and all the teaching and training I got to do because of him.
When you mentor people, you have to take into account what their level of understanding is and how they learn. Had Don just assumed I simply couldn’t do something because I had never done it, I wouldn’t be on this podcast. Don IS the reason I met Tony and a part of the JTS team.
Don’s ability to bring out the best in me as a wheeler is hard to put in words exactly, however, I truly believe he saw something in me and just kept on teaching and guiding me. Most times I had no idea I was learning so much from one of the greatest. I will never forget everything you taught me, You truly will be missed
R.I.P. Don Alexander – One of the Best! You will be missed but not forgotten!
We need more mentors to help keep this Jeep life alive. If you find yourself mentoring, or even just offering help to a driver, try to take the time to guide them at their level of understanding. Those of you who have wheeled for years have so much knowledge and experience that it can be overwhelming to someone brand new. Keeping it simple and helping where needed with the basics is a great way to give back and help keep our love of Jeeping growing.
