In a world of restomods Ford Broncos probably top the list, Land Rovers, hell Greg of Unofficial Use Only is building one of those right now….but what about a Jeep Cherokee SJ?
We had several people remind Josh and me when we were hating on the NEW Cherokee that there was a Cherokee before the XJ. This first-generation Cherokee is more streamlined than either the Bronco or Land Rover. Colors of Bordeaux metallic, dark gray, brown, and beige stripes. Golden Hawk tattooed on the sides.
The 1980 Golden Hawk Cherokee SJ has an equally impressive interior. You might expect a modern 700 hp Hemi or even an LS swap, but no the owner kept the 360 (5.9 liter) V8, but fuel injected.
The powerplant, axles, transfer case, and transmission have all been rebuilt, allowing the SJ to drive like new. A frame-off restoration allowed for new paint and rust protection to be applied, meaning the owner wouldn’t have to worry about salt destroying their truck.
With only 2,000 miles after the complete rebuild, it can be yours for only $195,000!
The Locals Hate You
The windshield sticker on a Jeep says “The Locals Hate You” on Fort Myers Beach. The image of a BLUE Jeep with the sticker was shared on “Best of Fort Myers Beach Facebook Page” It has since been deleted, but after 300 comments.
This sticker, aimed at Fort Myers Beach tourists, may have something to do with the state of the area after a Cat 5 hurricane.
Personally, I think having tourists visit, with their money, is a good thing to help rebuild the area. Can you imagine if this was put on a Jeep by someone who LIVED in Moab, or even in Utah? I guess you could argue that the Bureau of Land Management might have these stickers on their vehicles as they close UTAH off-road trails.
Jeep Talk Show Gladiator Update
Well, I was running out of things to talk about for the 2021 Jeep Talk Show Gladiator, so I decided to start working on the Motobilt Gladiator full skid system.
Not really, I can always think of something to talk about on such a great Jeep. I was delayed, most recently, to get the Christmas tree down and put the box back in the attic in the garage, but I decided I could put the belly skid on the box and prep and paint it there!
Over the last two days, that’s what I’ve been doing.
As you may recall I’ve had issues with the paint sticking to the Motobilt bumpers. The front bumper I just flat forgot to sand the surface of the bumper. Etching primer and flat black paint only. I did clean the surface with brake cleaner first though.
Flaked off pretty badly. It’s been repainted after aggressively sanding the surface.
When the rear bumper arrived I did it right, or so I thought, but I have some paint flaking off the bumper near the license plate.
With this belly skid I used paint thinner, completely sanded the surface, and cleaned it again with paint thinner. Wiped it down with a clean paper towel, and let it dry before adding two coats of etching primer, then two coats of flat black.
