Episode 958 – 25 mph Over the Limit!
Old Postal Jeep and the Police
I recently read a story about how David of Jalopnik drove a $500 postal jeep to Utah from Michigan, and back. David’s 1976 Jeep DJ-5D was the definition of a shitbox and still sporting the USPS white. Right-hand drive, and sliding door.
David had three encounters with the police. The first one was late at night in Colorado when he pulled off the highway and turned into a subdivision to check his map and a little relaxing. About 25 minutes later the police showed up as the lady whose house he was sitting in front of was concerned that the postman had been sitting at her house far too long.
The next stop, a bit more legitimate, he drove through a school zone in Kansas at 29 mph. Speedo did work, just not in the accurate mph reading. Turned out one of the officers had been following David and his adventure with the postal vehicle. After the officer on scene had a chat about the GMC truck he was working on and a few pictures from his phone David continued on.
The third and final encounter was near home when he stopped to get fuel. No working gas gauge so stopping was a good idea. This time David fell asleep at the pump. Another person getting fuel called the police. After a few minutes of talking to those cops, he was able to get on his way.

Driving a “special” vehicle can be a double-edged sword with the police. It can get you attention you don’t want, or it may get you good attention that sways how the officer deals with your infraction.
Speaking of Jeep/Police Encounters
The wife and I purchased a 1998 Jeep Cherokee. Our first Jeep. Over the years it has been my daily driver up until 2021 when I purchased the Gladiator.
One time when I was driving to work at HP Houston I was pulled over by a motorcycle cop. I drove the back streets due to the issue I had with the XJ overheating on the highway.
I generally don’t drive fast all the time, but I will accelerate quickly. The cop got me during one of these quick accelerations. It’s been a while but I believe he got me at 25 over the speed limit. I would have slowed down, but I didn’t see him, I mentioned motorcycle cop, right?
Jeep Talk Show Gladiator Update
The Jeep Show is doing more on YouTube. Part of this is due to people in the industry talking about how video, even for an audio podcast, is important to get more EARs for your show.
I’ve been reviewing JTS’s YouTube stats and was surprised to see one of the videos that we put up years ago is getting a fair amount of views. It is about the Jeeps Need a DLA D-Lift adapter.
If you have a HiLift jack, chances are good you have used it much. Yes, it really depends on the type of wheeling you do. This D-Lift adapter is designed to make a secure connection between your high-lift jack and a D-ring, cleavis, etc… on your Jeep.
Once you hook this up to your hi-lift and D-ring, the two are not going to separate.
My Jeep’s Needs d-lift adapter is currently in my XJ, but I’ll be moving it over to the Gladiator since that is what I use off-road now.
