Time to Charge a 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe

The Grand Cherokee 4xe supports Level 1 and Level 2 charging for adding energy to its 17.3-kilowatt-hour battery pack, and its maximum charging rate on a Level 2 setup is 7.2 kilowatts. For this test, we used the Jeep’s Level 1 mobile charger plugged into a regular garage outlet and a Wallbox Pulsar Plus Level 2 charger to see how long each one takes to charge the Grand Cherokee 4xe’s battery from 0% to 100%. Ambient temperatures for each test were comparable.

Level 1 Charging Test

The estimated charging time of 15 hours, and 7 minutes, but the actual charging time ended up being a bit less: 13 hours, 43 minutes

Level 2 Charging Test

It took 2 hours, 39 minutes to fully charge the battery with the Wallbox unit operating at 30 amps for 7.2 kW of power. The Wallbox app, however, showed a charging rate of around 6.5 kW

Both times, the Grand Cherokee 4xe’s battery took 15.3 kWh of energy and the instrument panel displayed 29 miles of all-electric range. Even if you use the slightly slower charging time, that’s a charging rate of 10.9 miles of range per hour — six times quicker than Level 1 charging.

Level 2 chargers can cost anywhere from roughly $300 to $600, and the final price can be significantly higher if you must first update your home’s electrical system before using one. That said, once you’ve charged with a Level 2 setup, it’s hard to go back to Level 1.

Jeep Talk Show Gladiator Update

Off-Road lights

As I’ve done this show and spoken to many of you with more off-road experience than I, along with gaining off-road experience myself by having a Jeep that can make it to and from the off-road destinations, I have learned that forward-facing bright off-road lights have limited use on the trail.

I maintain that these are great for emergency use and to have the ability to have such great illumination before the emergency is better than wishing you had it.

I highly recommend rock lights as this can help you and a spotter during night wheeling.  I’m using the KC HiLiTES Cyclone V2 LED.  I have a total of 9 of them.

After receiving the amazing TYRI Off-road lights I have run out of auxiliary switches!  1st world problems.

I still have TYRI Lights to install but no switches to turn them on and off.

There are aftermarket solutions, but I am trying to keep the Gladiator dash clean and free of obvious add-ons. This will change in the future I’m sure.

A little though and I’ve decided that I can rearrange how the switches are being used.  Right now all the rock lights are on two switches.  I’ll combine those into one switch.  The two TYRI Light D18 7” lights on an aux switch.  The rear bumper lights on a switch.  The two TYRI Light 1010 with an amber lens will be moved to the fog light/driving lights switch.

This will leave me another factory aux switch for the 10” V12 light bar which WILL be mounted just above the winch fairlead.  It is also amber.

I will be making a laminated card that indicates what switch does what, especially important with the pre-melted light covers over the D18 lights!

I turned on the switch but nothing happened!  Then I smelled something funny….
