A Bronco, An FJ Cruiser, and a Jeep went on the trail….
We had a student with an FJ Cruiser that we trained last week and it was surprising (and not surprising ) how well the FJ did. Completely capable and only had 35” tires.
But the coolest thing was that Don is writing another book for The Bronco and he had use of a fleet vehicle this past week and we were able to take it out for the training day.
The Bronco was a two-door Wildtrak w/Sasquatch package. Beautiful red color – Tony cues the bells and whistles lol. Gorgeous interior, lush, and of course brand new.
It had Goodyear Territory MT 35s – do not recommend those. We had to use lockers to do average climbs that Jeeps, Toyota, and trucks could do without them.
Now we know that there is an issue with the standard Tie rods with the Broncos and if you have seen one or even driven with one on harsh trails you know that is the weakest link. Don pre-planned for his week-long testing and ordered Beefier Fabtech TieRods just in case – luckily he didn’t need to change them out, but he was prepared. These Fab tech replacement tie-rods were at least double the standard size. Beefy
Now the fun part I got to do was drive the Bronco on our training ground. My first impression was, “A new car is so nice”. All the bells and whistles, big screen navigation system and camera front and rear, etc. YOu can smell the leather interior and all the plush details.
What I didn’t like about it was that when you sit the hood is very square and seems very long, compared to the jeep. And because it was square you couldn’t see the trail very well. I guess that’s why they installed a front camera (ugh). Anyway it felt like a huge truck hood that you couldn’t see out of and they installed these black (things) on the ends of the hood that stood up and blocked even more – (maybe used to tie down something on the roof?) Why?
The other thing I hated was the placement of the mirror. They block your view looking out and forward, so when you traverse a trail and you need to see your line, you can’t – again pushing people to use a camera (ugh).
Now the fun part: after we did the training course- which it did perform really well (except for the lockers needed because of the tires – I don’t believe the Bronco needed that) we were on a straight section of the road and Don said “floor it” OMGOSH once that Turbo kicked in – DANG that was fast. I LOVED IT!. WOW, that thing has some power to it.
Overall I would not buy one or own one. I LOVE my Jeep and probably always will. And BTW Don said I could quote him: “ I won’t be selling my Jeep to buy a Bronco anytime soon” Yeah, me neither.
It’s always fun to look at other vehicles and try things out. It was fun and the four-door would be much better because getting into the back seat of the 2 door was ridiculous. Yes, it has seats for four. It was fun but I’m happy with my little Jeep.
