Episode 690 – Another Jeep Speared By Wood!
This Week In Jeep
Another Jeep Speared By Wood
So yet again, within days of each other, we have a Jeeper experiencing something out of a final destination movie. And this one is a near mirror incident of the one we JUST reported on in Episode 683. This time in Wichita Kansas…. just close enough to be Chuck’s fault actually. An 18-year-old had a close call Tuesday afternoon when a board somehow fell off of a truck while on the freeway. We won’t say which truck or even what color it was, but we all know who you were. This “rogue board”, this piece of a “loose load” if you will, released itself from the truck and impaled the windshield of this poor girl’s Jeep. The teen said she was driving home from school when a small car in front of her Jeep swerved. She also swerved, but it was too late. The next thing she knew, there was a piece of wood sticking through her windshield. The teen said she never saw the truck carrying the wood. The 18-year-old’s mother shared the photo of the impaled Jeep Wrangler on social media and said her daughter ((QUOTE)) “is shaken up but physically OK.” She said another motorist stopped to check on her daughter after witnessing the freak accident. That motorist, Michael Jones, said he was on his way to work Tuesday afternoon when he turned around to help the young Jeep owner. Jones said he saw the girl’s Jeep as it was stopping on the side of the road. He witnessed the girl being very stressed, so he tried to calm her down. Apparently, Jones drives a Hummer, so he started talking to her about the feud between Jeeps and Hummers, trying to calm her down, just to get her mind off of everything. The piece of wood, roughly the size of a 2×4 but much more irregular, pierced the windshield right at the rearview mirror, which if anyone knows Jeeps isn’t all that far from your head. The wood sheared the mirror off the glass and came to rest in the cabin by more than a foot at an angle towards the passenger side. Thankfully no one was in the passenger front seat, otherwise, this story would have much more gruesome details. Incidents like this point out the potential dangers of people not properly storing cargo, (Chuck). Kansas law requires drivers to have their cargo secured to their vehicles or trailers before hitting the road (Chuck), and the U.S. Department of Transportation sets out specific securement requirements and rules for commercial vehicles……. (Chuck)
AAA’s Foundation of Traffic Safety researched this issue and found yearly road debris causes more than 200,000 crashes. Items falling out of vehicles, including unsecured loads, account for about two-thirds of those crashes. After what happened Tuesday afternoon, Jones said he wishes more people would have stopped to check on the teen instead of slowing down to take photos.

New Hybrid Tire Launch for all Jeepers
Tires are always a topic of discussion when you wheel, whether it’s hard-core rock crawling or easy fire roads and anything in between. I have been a huge proponent of Nexen Roadian MTX tires because we wheel some great black diamond trails, rocks, and other amazing trails out here in So Calif. I love how they perform and how they grip on any obstacle we run. I do love my Nexens.
Don Alexander, Bill, and I have been a part of several tire product launches and we were asked to test and help with the media launch event for Toyo Tires this past weekend. We took the Toyo Tire engineers, staff, and media influencers out to our training grounds for a demonstration of how well the tires performed in harsh terrain, including some easy rocks, sand, mud, and rutted trails. The new Open Country R/T Trail is a hybrid tire.
A hybrid somewhere between their AT3 with a more aggressive tread leaning toward their mud terrain. It’s a great tire for the all-terrain lover who uses their jeep as a daily driver but doesn’t want the noise of a mud terrain tire. This R/T tire is actually a blend of both worlds – the AT and the MT. First, off it performed beautifully on our hard rock-packed regular fire roads. We aired down to 14 psi and put them through our testing and they did awesomely. We even got to test them in the rain, hail, and mud. And guess what? They performed as expected – perfectly. We never felt a slip or slide on any terrain. Now we haven’t tried them on the big rock crawling yet, but we will very soon. The sidewall has much more aggressive lugs than the AT3 and grips great and the flex is also looking very good. For the short distances, we had them on the highway they seemed very stable, even at 14 PSI. They are smooth and very quiet, especially when you compare them to mud terrain tires.
So why would I talk about another tire brand? Because you always have choices. Like choosing between an electric and a gas jeep. Or, like choosing what color jeep you want. I have always said that wheeling is dependent on what you plan to do with your jeep. So for newbies who may be upgrading slowly and want a look of a more aggressive tire but do not want the noise that an MT gives, OR, they are not rock crawling yet, this tire is for you. Toyo Tires is offering a 45,000-mile warranty on these R/T Trails, which if you were not aware most MTs have no mileage warranty. So this may solve your issue of you wanting a tire to wheel off road sometimes, but you have to drive the jeep every day. Check out Toyo Tires new Open Country R/T Trail https://www.toyotires.com/product/open-country and let us know how they perform for you.
And speaking of performing; you can get a chance to see how these tires do this coming weekend at our JTS event in SoCal. Didn’t know about it or didn’t sign up yet? You have till today, Friday, to do so. We are finalizing the details so go to The Jeep Talk show.com and look for my Newbie Nuggets section notes for the link. Easy to sign up and hope to see you there.

Jeep Talk Show Gladiator Update
KC hilites Cyclone V2 lights are mounted vertically on the stubby bumper ends. Technically on the exposed portion of the front Gladiator frame. I drove most of the way (accidentally) to work, in the dark, down I-10 with the Cyclones on. No random swerving, no honking horns, and so far at least, no pics of it on social media.
I may need more lights!
Moving on to the next Gladiator minor project… I have bought a ball mount that replaces a bolt for the passenger grab handle, the one close to the glovebox, would be a cool place to have a mount for a handie-talkie. I found the ball online for $40!!!! No way I’m paying that much for something so simple. Instead of making one myself, I found that RAM Mounts has one for a Motorcycle, the RAM-B-367U. It comes with a 1” ball and several bolts that are all way too long and the wrong thread for a JT.
Thanks to the internet I found that I needed a Number 14×13/4 countersunk self-tapping screw.
Now I have a 1” RAM ball mount installed. Keep listening for what I do next.
